Her Majesty the '01 XJ8 won't start....
Thanks so much all of you. I probably did a mix of all the suggested steps, reason why I'm probably facing another wash. I plan get try this again tomorrow Wednesday afternoon - will follow your steps Danielsand. I shall keep you posted.
Danielsand, and all: many, many thanks for your valuable input. I got her to start this morning! What a relief. Took her for a spin in the neighborhood, still need to take her on a longer (faster freeway) drive. Do have some codes that popped up - kind of expecting that. These are:
0031 HO2S Bank 1 Sen 1 Heater circuit low
0037 HO2S Bank 1 Sen 2 Heater circuit low
0051 HO2S Bank 2 Sen 1 Heater circuit low
0057 HO2S Bank 2 Sen 2 Heater circuit low
0102 MAF or VAF A Circuit Low Input
0112 IAT Sensor 1 Circuit Low Input
I erased the codes, but check engine light pretty came right back up. I need to read again. Do you believe it will correct itself by driving more?
And here goes for another cheap and quite easy fix !
Cheers

My experience has been that an OBD II reader is the best way to clear codes. Disconnecting the battery and touching the 2 cables together does not always
work. I had a transmission fault and it still showed a code that would not clear.
Using a different OBD II reader, I was able to clear it. See if you can borrow
a different reader and clear the codes if they continue to show up with a car
that is running well and does not actually have faults.
I do occassionally clear the ECM by disconnecting the battery and touching the cables together to solve unexplainable running quirks. The ECM may have learned some
bad tricks recently.
