Transmission Grinding Noise

All - 2001 XJR 85K

Just started hearing this problem the other morning. It did not appear over time, it just started to be quite loud on a cold start. it also continues when the car is warmed up.

The noise is coming from the transmission, it is louder under the car, listening to the transmission. At idle the noise is loudest in P or N, when i place it into gear it mostly disappears, and when i press the Sport mode it fades as well. When i drive the car it is still present, and i can hear the least when it is sports mode or top gear.

The bottom of the transmission, looks damp, i then put in small amount of fluid to see if it would solve the problem. It did not.

options? other tests? Should i take this to a jag dealer, or find somebody who knows these mercedes transmissions?

Thanks,
Darren

Well, not sure what to tell you. The mercedes transmission is relatively indestructible. If the transmission has been leaking from the pan, I would definitely consider quickly a fluid drain and fill, new gasket and filter. Was it low on fluid? How did you know? I think the merc trannies have an inspection tube you can install a dipstick in and measure.

Other than that, best to let a shop with experience with the merc transmission give you some advice.

If it has been leaking and is down on fluid you need to get it to someone familiar with that transmission .

Knocking is unfortunately never good -- if it is indeed in the transmission.

I would buy a 25 dollar dipstick and check the level. Ebay, look for the mercedes sl600 dispstick.
