Default Supercharger Grinding Noise

It never rains it pours . . .

This morning, i had a heavy grinding sound that went away after 5 seconds, then driving the car this afternoon, it started to make the grinding sound loudly at idle then it subsided. Driving it home we noticed the noise still but not overly noisy.

At home, the noise seems to be coming from the supercharger - 90% sure, i will take the belt of later to verify this.

It is undriveable, because it attracts attention because of the noise. What are my options?

1. There is a supercharger kit on ebay, not sure if this works
2. Could it just be the snout, how could i diagnose
3. Will a low oil level in the supercharger cause this
4. A new supercharger? I'm an ok mechanic, could i install it?

Thanks is advance,
Darren

I am assuming you are dealing with an XJR here, what year is it, and also, how many miles are on the car.

I have never messed with the supercharger on my XJR but since it is mounted "upside down" (in the "V" of the V8) and is under the intercoolers, I would assume that it would be more than a few hours work to get it out of there.

I have heard and seen around on this forum that it is possible to acquire a used supercharger relatively low cost on ebay or:
I found this one web site that I have no idea about the legitimacy of but thats a risk you have to take when using google:

whatever you end up doing, good luck

before you get too far, really look into the idler pulleys. I have replaced them on both of my xjrs. I thought the supercharger was causing the problem at first as well. Taking off the belts will tell you if you are right. As for ebay superchargers, I have seen several in the past few years for about 500 bucks.

Tensioner and idler pulleys are often the culprit...A $3.00 stethoscope from Harbor Freight will help to isolate the problem.

Tensioner pullley assy has been upgraded by Jaguar, needs an additional bracket now -

Rebuilding the blower usually means big money because the rear bearing has no inner race, it runs directly on the vane shaft, which of course is one of a matched pair, sold in sets....

Thanks for the responses. . . i have an update.

I have ruled out the supercharger, by removing the belt.

The noise is coming from the transmission, it is louder under the car, listening to the transmission. At idle the noise is loudest in P or N, when i place it into gear it mostly disappears, and when i press the Sport mode it fades as well.

The bottom of the transmission, looks damp, i then put in small amount of fluid to see if it would solve the problem. It did not.

Any thoughts/should i create a new thread.
