X308 Shifter Clicking in park
I noticed yesterday that when the brake is pressed while in park, an audible click can be heard from the shifter. I believe it is the reverse lockout that is clicking, but the volume of sound it makes is a little concerning.
Is there a lubrication procedure? Is the clicking a warning sign that the mechanism needs attention?
Thanks

you are correct, there is a gear shifter lockout that will not allow you to shift out of park unless you have foot on brake. if you look to the left of the P position there is a plastic plug you can remove if the brake pedal interface do not work you can use the key or something similar to press and override it.
The click is normal-the lockout device was introduced to avoid accidents where the selector was accidentally put into gear without the brakes on, causing 'unintended acceleration' incidents.
The brake pedal has to be physically pressed in order to release the shifter lock & allow the gear selector to be moved out of 'Park'.
Sometimes if you don't use the car for a while, the shifter lock can become 'sticky' & need several pedal presses before you can hear it clicking.
The noise level can vary-my old 1995 Daiimler Double Six had quite a noisy shifter lock but it always worked fine & never got better or worse-my current 2001 XJR has a quieter shift lock.
