Cold air

Good afternoon (or morning or evening depending on wr w are),
Rather new to this site and so far it is nice to have a reference and peeps to chat with.
I own a wonderful 1994 XJ6 Been in the family and well taken care of.
AT this time I am only able to get cold air to come out of the window vent and the upper vents no matter the temperature setting.
Heat will come out appropiatelt out of the floor vents or rear vents. Any suggestions as to where to start? Winter is on its way here in Wisconsin

Sound like one of the flaps that direct the air flow in the ducts is stuck or broken.

The upper servo is stuck. It could be the motor stuck from non use during the summer or the demister vent/flaps could have fallen down blocking movement of the rotary flap.
I have had success tapping on the servo drive motor with a long thin dowel if the motor is simply stuck in one spot.

Thanks guys, Bob could I find the location of the servo in the Hayes Manual?

Not much of a mechanic with cars, but rather mechanically inclined. So I can follow directions

Welcome to the forum. Looks like you are on your way to finding a solution. I just wanted to say 'hi' to another Wisconsinite AND XJ40 owner. cheers,
Scott

Here is an ADVERT for one on eBay.

Jaguar XJ6 XJ40 A/C Motor Servo - JLM11556 - NEW WJ18 | eBay

It is mounted to the right side of the climate control airbox in the center on the bulkhead. You have to remove the right side under panel beneath the passenger airbag. There are 2 rotary flap servo motors, Upper and Lower.

You can tap it while operating the TEMP control knob to attempt to free it if that is what is stuck. Don't hit it too hard as the case is plastic.

I have seen the motor housing break when the flap sticks and the motor keeps powering the shaft. The motor is geared quite low so there is a lot of torque for the little motor. If it breaks, you can usually here the motor 'click' over and over as the gears jump/slip.

good luck.

Hi Bib,
Thanks for your advice. I managed to find bothnthe upper and Lower quite well. I could hear and feel the lower motor turn when I switched the temp. I could not here the upper with the car running. I tapped it as hard as a dare and that did not help. I also could not feel the servo operating when I managed a few fingers on it. Perhaps as the car is 1994 it has gone bad and needs to be replaced.? Any other thing I should check prior to attempting to take out this unit...
Thank much

Ps r u from UK???

Thanks guys. Like anything this is a process. After taking the front vents out as well. I could see through the flaps and noticed that there is a plastic pc approx 30mm wide and not sure how long (150) that is loose and fallen, look like it my be a flap for the demist. Not sure how to get the top window vents or the top cover off.
At least I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
And direction to Abe able to get to this would be great.

Thanks

Ps. Any one know how to find the tiny bulbs used inside the switches on the control panel? I have it out but my local build store was no help

I posted a while ago on getting the demister vents/flaps back in place by pulling them up with your fingers in the holes up at the windscreen and reinstalling the screws IF they are not damaged/broken.

Thanks Bob,
I will try. Seems as though on my 1994 when I pull out the windshield vents there is another vent cover? Guess i'll see if I can get them out too.

Here is a photo of what I see looking in through the center vents

I want to stay on topic and have a similar issue. My 94 seems to be working the way it supposed to, as far as the owners manual states but the temps seem low. On defrost the car will bake you out if set to max bit volume and temp seem low on the floor position.

Aftet a whir the car is comfortable but I think when it gets colder I will want warmer air down below. Is this fairly normal or should I be able to cook my feet if I want?

hi, i know this reply is very late as i have not visited this forum for a while, have you fixed the heating problem? i had a similar issue & completely removed the dash not to difficult to do & found the demister flap had come loose jamming the rotary flap at the top of the matrix.
