High pitched squeal !

My 1993 XJ6 has developed a high pitched squeal coming from the rear of the vehicle. Squeal present when stationary and driving, louder when you open the trunk lid. Fuel pump about to give up the ghost? Any thoughts on this? If it is the fuel pump, can it be replaced without removing the gas tank? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks,
AlinBC CANADA

I can't think of anything back there that could cause that noise when stationary except perhaps the fuel pump .. if it is indeed the pump, parts are quite inexpensive but unfortunately the tank does have to come out.

It isn't that complex a job, but a bit labour intensive.

If you have to do it, lots of advice here on the forum.

Thanks Larry,
You're a gent make no mistake! Not looking forward to this but I'll give it a go. I've never known of a fuel pump making this sort of noise, usually they just fail. I've changed out several fuel pumps on other cars I've owned. This squeal is very similar to that of a dry motor bearing.
Appreciate Your Input,

Hi Al,

I think you and Larry are right about your fuel pump, but there are three other possibilities worth investigating just in case. The radio antenna motor is in the right rear fender behind the carpeted trim, if you have a CD changer it will be mounted somewhere in your trunk, and if you have the rear Self-Leveling Suspension it could be possible one of the shock absorbers is leaking pressure (I know, a remote possibility).

Before you pull your fuel tank, use a long screwdriver or socket extension as a stethoscope; touch one end to the fuel filler opening and the other end to your ear. This should tell you if the squeal is definitely coming from the tank. On your '93 the fuel filler neck is welded to the tank so any sound from the tank will be just as audible at the filler opening.

Please keep us informed.

Cheers,

Don

Hey Don,
Sound thinking! I have a CD disc changer. Alas, after checking both the antenna and the CD changer, neither are the source of the squeal which, for reasons best known to itself, seems much quieter today.
Appreciate Your Input Don,

Are we going to see your '40 at Ladysmith Transfer Beach 'Brits on the beach' this year Al?

I'll be there and so will Jim from Nanaimo - let's make it a show of strength!!

Be there or be square (headlights, that is ;))

Hey Larry,
I'm afraid I'm going to be 'square' . My 93 Sovereign does have rectangular headlights too!
Al.

We like 'em square! :icon_special:

So a week next Sunday (July 14th) in Ladysmith? Hope you can you make it.

AlinBC: I have the exact same high pitch whine/hum/squeal emanating from the trunk. I believe it to be the fuel pump. Did you solve this riddle? Ren
