Lower Shock Absorber Bush for xj40, 1992
Hi,
I have a problem with lower bush in rear absorbers, they need replacement, but according to the data I poses there is no original replacement. Do you know if there is an alternative solution? I dont want to buy new shocks just because there is a bush issue. Pls help. I am open for mods, etc. If you have any ideas for modifications / use of smth which just fits and does the job, it will be great too. |
Someone will be able to confirm but if yours is using early shocks then yeah no replacement available for bottom bushes, if it's using late shocks then you can get replacement bushes, they are the same things as on later x300 cars and even early x308.
For the early shocks I suppose you could machine couple spacers for the shock eye, use later bushes, press them into the spacer and then the whole thing into the shock? Shouldn't be too difficult or pricey? I believe the bolt going through the bush is the same size on both shock types. |
yes, this is early shock - like this:
https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.../brand/jaguar/ this is joint ball bushing, and the one from newest model does not fit yes i tried to find smth as a mod, but all I am finding has the hole for screw 14mm max, and in my case the hole should be 21mm the max size of bushing should be 47mm |
Hi jagmaniak,
Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us. I have not worked on an early XJ40 recently, but I have done shocks on X300s and X308s recently and found that the cost of new shock absorbers was only a little more than the cost of new lower bushings, so I did not bother with the hassle of replacing the bushings. The new shocks also come with new yellow foam rubber bushings for the shaft, so to do the rears, you would only need to also buy the big yellow foam rubber spring isolator bushings ("donuts") and the small rubber "Top Hat" bushings. Your original shocks were probably made by Boge. The closest modern equivalents are by Sachs (Boge and Sachs are now both owned by ZF). Bilstein, Monroe and KYB are other options. Cheers, Don |
hey, already bought KYB, but according to seller there are no foams included.
i think it is more expensive than just bushings, but problem is there are no bushings... so no other option - was hoping about any MOD known in the xj40 lovers comunity, but no luck. |

comes without any foams, should I move the old one to this new one - including 14 3 12 11 10? The bellows/gaiter/boot can often be re-used, and the large washer (10) and spacer (12) can almost always be re-used. Cheers, Don |
