power steering rack
I had my shop check out the leak on my '93 Sovereign, and the recommendation is to replace the rack. The shop had an aftermarket brand that they recommend, and as Don just tells me, new units are non-existent. I asked my shop to give me a day to look into options, and just wondering what anyone else in the know on here recommends. My shop was saying how the rack is corroded and "has done its job", which I have no reason to doubt. Thoughts please? Thanks as always for keeping the endangered species on the road.
A quick check of rock auto shows all 3 of their options to be out of stock- a situation I am finding more common there and elsewhere recently. There are rebuild kits available if you were of the mindset to use one, but I have not tried that myself. I suggest that if your wallet will take the blow then it may be simplest to have it done while your shop can get one. Maybe consider having the hoses changed too as they are probably not pristine either? (I forget if you said this was done, sorry.) good luck.
Thanks for the input, Jerry. The hoses haven't been done but it sounded as if the shop was going to do that during the surgery. I'm thinking that I rather go the best option than any sort of "OK" route. I do trust the shop implicitly. My perception is that remanufactured or a rebuild would provide what the Jaguar engineers intended whereas the non-OEM unit would "do the job". I'm really leaning toward rebuild, as you say, if my wallet can handle that load.
