AJ8700 Radio swap

The original AJ8700 radio in my 87 Series III XJ6 is giving me problems and I wanted to replace it with another OE radio of similar type or possible a later model.

Wondering if any of the later model radios would be plug-in compatible connection wise and also be identical mounting wise with the original AJ8700? I'm thinking the later model radios would be easier to find and might be in better shape at this point.

you might try a V12 Series 3 radio from a Canadian car, same car as the Series 3 XJ-6 but 12 cylinders, renamed the V12, made until 1992, but not sold in the USA, whereas the XJ-6 was made until 1987. Mounting and plugs should be the same, however I am not 100% on that.

at the worse case, you can transfer the plug from the old radio, they are removable.

also you might check eBay.

After doing some research on the factory radios, I came to the conclusion that the AJ8700 was one of the better ones and I should look into fixing the problems so I could keep the one I have.

Biggest problem with mine is every time I turn it on, it asks me for the security code. I believe they are only supposed to do this when the battery has been disconnected.

Wondering if anyone knows what wire might be disconnected in the harness that would cause this -- assuming the problem is external to the radio. If the problem is internal, is there a schematic reference online for the AJ8700?

Almost sounds like a blown fuse in your permanent 12v line. The radio normally has permanent 12V to maintain your settings, time etc. and a switched 12V line. If it is only seeing switched power when you turn on the ignition it would behave as you describe. Have you checked the fuse?

I just picked up two cars this week, an 86 & 87...The radio in the 87 is working perfectly, and has the manual and code card, etc...
The 86 has the correct radio for the model year, and doesn't require a code...
Let me know if you are interested...

I've got an exhaust leak I'm chasing right now. Once I get it fixed, I'll get make to the radio. Tough to enjoy the radio when the exhaust is so loud!
