Dumb question: Unknown boxes

Hi Dumb question: What are these two components for (see picture)? I have only worked on old (read simple) Volvos from the 60s in the past. The jag is quite complex in comparison so I have a lot to learn =) Jaguar XJ12C, 1976 Thx Marcus |
the large tank might be a Vacuum Reservac tank. If not a vacuum tank, then it is a Coolant Recovery tank. The small box is where a spare key would have been placed at the factory. Serves no other purpose except to maybe hide a tool to open the bonnet if the pull cable breaks.

Odd. I have only a bit to offer.
1. I found a pocket almost directly over the wheel on the drivers side. (HD). on the wing wall. Supposedly the receptacle for a small box and the emergency key. als, none there in my car. 2. Now, because of this post, I'll have to look under the bonnet of my car and see what is there. Or, is it in front of the wheel ? I see a lamp bucket.... Carl |
look behind the lamp bucket, that's where those pockets are inthe Series 3.

The picture is in front of the right/front wheel. The big black box could maybe be for vacuum (for the heater/AC valves?). I first thought a charcoal canister...
The small box can hardly be for some spare key, has a cable connected to it (cannot follow it all the way). I took another picture:https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...ebeeff0497.jpg |
The big one is definitely a vacuum tank. On the V12 Series IIIs it's a vacuum reserve tank for the power brakes. It might serve alternate purposes on other models, when fitted.
The small one is a mystery to me. If you have the time you could pick the appropriate listing here..... https://www.jaguarclassicparts.com/u...r-vehicle-info ....and scroll thru the pages until you see it ! Cheers DD |
in the first picture it looked similar to the spare key box welded to the inner wing in Series 3 XJ, but obviously it is not. Then it could be an ignition amplifier, or ignition or coil or ballast, but why would it be located under the fender / wing?, so it is probably not that either.
No clue except to follow the wiring harness to see where it leads. |
