front muffler delete.
 

Whilst i have car in air and everything is easily accessible i would love to delete my front mufflers, does anyone know of a place that sells the pipes? Or do i just need to wait and find a muffler shop to fab something up?
Also does anyone have a sound clip.ir YouTube video of engine running without the front mufflers?

AJ6 Engineering in the UK sells the "silencer substitute" pipes...but they're a bit expensive. Best/easiest/cheapest best is to just have the local muffler shop do it.

I've only heard one XJ6 so modified. Frankly, it wasn't a very attractive sound. The owner said he was gonna try something different. He wanted the sporty tone of the 60s Jag sedans but those systems were quite different. It wasn't overly loud by any means. It's just that the tone wasn't right...according to his tastes (and mine). But, tastes vary.

A few considerations.....to....well...consider.... The rear mufflers arent really mufflers, they are a straight through resonators designed to eliminate a particular resonance associated with the muffler tip being far away from the actual muffler. The 1 3/4 pipe size will always make a raspy or import tuner sound. The pipes just dont have the diameter for the deep mellow tone most auto enthusiasts find pleasing. Think pipe organ. You need 2.5 or 3 inch pipes for that. If you want some additional sound replace the existing mufflers with turbo mufflers and adapt the existing pipes by welding. Wont do much and probably not worth the time, money or effort.

There is a big sound difference between a 4000 car with a lazy 6 cylinder running 2.88 gears.. it will always sound "not so good" compared to a higher revving faster winding eight with, lets say 3.70 gears.

The pulse of the exhaust is not so exciting, as you wait for it to wind up into the higher rpms around 3500 or so. I guess it all depends on the right combination..car weight ...gear set... displacement...pipe diameter.

When I was a kid I owned a 427 Corvette with 3.70 gears and side pipes ... it was a joy to listen to, a you shifted through the 4 speed gears. Had a beautiful sound at 70 MPH in 4th which brings to mind another factor,..you can always tell an automatic transmission car from a stick shift car,... autos never seem so crisp as the standard shift cars. at least to me they don't.

however now that I am a senior citizen i prefer the smoother low sound. If I were to try and change the "sound" I would consider chambered exhaust pipes. Look like a row of little sausage links,...actually that is what they used inside of the Corvette side exhaust pipes I mentioned earlier. I would put 2 pipes all the way from the cat to the curved tail pipe tips, one on each side,..then if the sound was not "right" tack on some glass packs right at the end.

i deleted all factory piping, no matter how you arrainge the rear or side exit exhaust Jag V12 system you will hear 1st one side then the other, its mixes up the smooth cadence of the 12 cyl.exhaust note!

so me working, out of a different tool box(mind set), i came up with ALL 12 cylinders out of ONE 5" dia. outlet.

i have had many compliments about the sound, even from V8 guys!

believe me there is NO backpressure, custom made the 2 manifold outlets into a large 2 1/2" down pipes per side, then thru 2 straight thru mfflers(2.5" in and out).

they blend at there outlets, into a 5" flared turn down exit pipe!

you cannot believe the sound all thru the RPM ranges, but it really comes to life between 3500/4500rpm ,just when torque peak starts coming on!
it sounds like a scream at 6500/7000rpm.

YES its a little loud, but coming to you and passing away its fantastic!

also a sound clip does no justice for it!

also helps to be a true motorhead guy!

I have a 1995 jag xj6 that I installed a 2.5 inch exhaust cutout on right after the manifold and man do I love it Ive got a switch in the center console ash tray I don't smoke so I didn't need the ash tray, but boy oh boy does it sou d good it's a summit cutout kit. Heres my youtube video of it

Old old thread, but I did delete the front mufflers absolutely loved the sound, didn’t really make it louder, just deeper! Didn’t record any sound clips, but have since swapped out drivetrain to v8 , sounds totally different now. :)

I like my result. Sun coast down pipes to cats, to jag front mufflers, then to glass packs by the PO. Oh, an H pipe to equalize.

Nice burble at idle and just enough when run up to Id the V8...

Great result.
