Hood/ Bonnet louvers
 

Has anyone seen or done hood louvers on an XJ6?

I'm a big fan of the coombs modified mk2's and was wondering if bringing some of that look to the xj6 would work. I'm also considering powdercoating my wire wheels gloss black like some of the racing jags.

Love to hear some thoughts.

Yeah I was thinking along the same lines. Love the look of louvers on the bonnet. Would serve a practical purpose too as the old 4.2 does generate a lot of heat. Black wires would look tough also. Post up some pics if you get it done.

I've seen a few XK8's with what appears to be factory louvers. They appear to be louvers "plates" that screw into openings on the hood (bonnet) Barry

I installed louvers on my Jag when I did the bare metal respray and other body work.
I wanted louvers like the ones on a 68 Shelby GT 500. Those were too long - too many louver slats. So I looked around until I found the size I wanted.

These are the type found on a 78 Camaro Z-28. They are mounted in the front wings (fenders) just above and a bit behind the front wheel.

I attached them with the screws and some epoxy - they are functional.... I am in the process of installing a FI 350 and wanted good flow through cooling.

I was considering bonnet louvres too - more like a '67 442 hood. I'd like to see more examples if there are any.

As I understand it, the Coombes Mark 2 louvres were made on a separate sheet of steel, then a rectangular hole was cut in the bonnet, the louvre plate welded in, then the joint was filled with body lead, and repainted. So from the outside it looked like the louvres were actually punched into the bonnet. A glance underneath showed the separate parts, of course.

but they are 6" wide and 1/2" tall ,they stick above the flat hood panel, considered important for drawing hot air from underhood, flat mount cast type air may slide over without much air flow , donno tho!

altho something that was studied back 50 odd yrs ago, at high speed a high pressure can build up at base of windshield(aka Camaro reverse hood scoops), and on flat mount louvers ,may force OR stall air flow out of hood!

i had a 1982 Camaro Pace car ,and installed flat mount cast louvers, but further forward and they worked well at reducing under hood temps!
so give some thought on where to mount things, NACA ducts are best at drwaing air out, and drag reduction,if its that important!

of course after shut down its a whole different story!
racing with the engine shut off is difficult at best,LOL.
