speedo bulb fail...

tried to replace the bulb in the speedo guage today, but fail..got the round display head unit out of the dash 3/4 way but would not come out all the way...feels like the wires are pulling real tight behind it...removed the middle light panel to push from the back but no avail...any help?

Hmmm. Usually it's the initial movement that's hard to accomplish, not the last bit of the removal.

With the under-dash panel removed you can probably see and/or reach up to replace the bulb or determine what's holding the speedo in place.

Sorry I don't have a solid answer for you.

the dash wood is newly replaced by previous owner so all the gauges turn loose easily..got me stumped because i've done a few and they all pop right out, this one is tight as if its got a snag or really short wires to the back of it..and i'm scared to pull hard and/or damaged the new wood...

What year is this one? The early models, pre-83 or so, had an old fashioned speedo cable vs. later models with the electric speedo. That would certainly keep the speedo from pulling out.

Bingo Doug, it's a 79... What should I do?

You'll have to reach up from below to release the cable. A knurled nut holds it in place. Or maybe if you remove the tach you can reach it.

thanks doug, i'm a newbie mech, want to tackle a valve cover gasket, seems simple enough, any advice on that job?

of course after all that wiggling of the speedo, it lights up now..go figure..although all instrument gauges are dim...
