XJ6 Series III factory fog lights
 

I've been told the series III XJ6 cars came prewired for fog lamps.

When I got mine, it had some old Hella lamps mounted under the front bumper.

Now I have some NOS Lucas square 8 fog lamps I would like to put on instead of the old Hellas.

Question is, did the bumper come pre-drilled for fog lamps? If so, where are the holes supposed to be. Mine are about where the bumper frame attachments are. Just wondering if this is factory or not?

yes, all XJ came prewired for auxiliary (Fog or Driving) lights; The factory position falls almost exactly below the inner high-beam headlamps.

but you can use any available pre-drilled hole you find under the front bumper, or drill your own, (very thick aluminum), and you can mount any fog or spot lamp you like. I installed a double duty kit, (Fog and Driving lamps in each housing), which I found at (of all places) at Wal-Mart.

the factory wiring on cars shipped to USA prevents both the headlamps and fog lamps to be ON at the same time. When you turn the Switch to the FOG position, the headlights go OFF.

If you want the ability to have both ON at the same time, you can install the European headlights switch which has more positions and combinations than the American headlights switch, and yet, they both connect to the same wiring plug, no rewiring is needed.

I've just added fog lamps & enabled my switch for the option & they work! However the fog indicator in the center warning cluster doesn't illuminate. How do you enable it??

pull the black plastic cluster cover to see if the bulb is missing. Do you really want that yellow indicator piercing you straight into the eyes as you drive with fogs?

I think you have to add a jumper wire.

This is dashboard indicator for rear fog lights. The indicator is there are all cars. I don't think there was ever a dashboard indicator for the front fog lights. Can't remember for sure. Anyhow, if you run the jumper wire you'll get the warning indicator on the dash when you turn on the [front] fog lights.

I'm 100% that it was Gregory Andrachuk who passed this clever tidbit along many many years ago.

Yup…that was me, but I had entirely forgotten this. Doug, I admire your memory…some days I don’t remember what I had for breakfast.
It is easy to make a jumper: it is coming back to me now…. I just used a short length of wire to bridge the two fuses, with fuse cradles at each end squeezed a bit to fit within the existing fuse cradles.
The Canadian and US cars did not have rear fogs, so the fog lamp indicator bulb in the dash display is essentially brand new. And it is not bright enough to be any sort of distraction.
Small modifications to the Series III cars are very rewarding!

These are the correct (original equipment) Series III fog lamps - they are Cibié Airport 35 lamps; the cars are pre-wired and there is only the one wire to connect as the lamps are grounded through the bumper mount. As Jose has mentioned, a hole large enough to accomodate the lamp mount bolt must be drilled in the (heavy) aluminium bumper bar - and as Jose has also stated and as you can see, the position is directly below the inner headlamp. It is a very straightforward procedure:

And here's a UK spec car with the standard Cibie's with European yellow fog light lenses.. A straight bolt-on with the single live feed.#

It's a good idea to keep the covers on. Down in the muck and bullets region, the lenses are easily broken.

Well, surprisingly, these are very easily available, new or used. Just google; "Cibie Airport 35 lamps". The correct OEM lamps for the Jaguar have the chrome, not black, casing, and a clear, not yellow, lens. The Jaguar covers shown in the photo below are not normally available - the lamps come with Cibie-labelled covers.

Oh yes, and I must confess that I use the yellow lenses so I can preserve the clear standard lenses which I'm keeping in a safe place. Although I do think that the yellow lighting does look quite cool.
