'94 xjs 6 cyl gas tank removal

I found some rust in the back of the rear seat... I'm trying to remove the gas tank to be able to weld freely (without fires or explosions)...

I removed the metal latches holding the tank, unplugged the fuel lines under the car and drained the gas out.

when I pull the tank, the lines on the bottom of the tank are on the way... I see no way how to unplug them; there is no access from under the car...

Should I just pull harder? any ideas?

Thanks

some progress

finally managed to remove the gast tank...
I have attached some pics showing the welding (amateur - spll?) and the piece with the first coat of primer...

I think I will apply 2 more coats, then some seam-sealer and finally some paint...

While I have the tank out.... what should I check for? the top-end connection of the fuel lines look kinda rusty, but the rest look ok.....

Don't know if this applies to XJS, but if your fuel pump is in the tank then look up link lead and fuel pump problems in the XJ40 forum.

Now would be a good time to make sure all is good, because you don't want to have to take the tank out again.

I installed a new factory pump in my '93 XJS and it failed 56 weeks later. Of course it had a 1 year warranty but the dealer did replace it for free thankfully.

Hello, I just disconnected the "check valve" that is in the gas tank. It was obstructed and caused a terrible screeching sound that took me several weeks to track down to the check value in the gas tank. I would remove it and clean it out or replace it with a new one. I would also purchase an after market fuel pump and replace the one you have. Check out the deals on e-bay. I purchased one for $47 shipped free and has a one year guarantee. I also would check the sending unit so that you are assured that it doesn't have a short.
