Exhaust smell through heating vents??

Exhaust smell through heating vents??
Hi, my diesel Sport XJ6 has an exhaust smell coming through the heater vents and, on occasion, smoke from under the bonnet on the driver side. When i open the bonnet there is nothing to indicate where it is coming from? Its not overheating because the temp gauge is where it should be. Is this a serious problem? whats the cause and fix?
