Default More gearbox questions th400

made a start replacing the filter and sump gasket on my car(v12) and it raised a few questions .
1. Sheared a bolt undoing them. Can I replace with a normal nut and bolt after drilling it out?
2. If I drill and save the thread, what size is the replacement? Metric or unf?
3. Took around 4.5 litres of fluid out, probably way too much dark red in colour not brown. Is that about normal colour on a box that’s not had an oil change I don’t think?
4.plenty of silt in the bottom of the sump. Once again is that to be expected on an un serviced box?
Comments welcome and as always thanks in advance.

Those bolts do that all the time. They are 5/16"s. I'd recommend using a heil coil thread insert instead.

Sounds like the right amount in the sump. Once you remove the filter more should come out. Crud in the sump is normal. Get the magnets clean and clean the sump out. New fulter, new gasket, new ATF and drive...

Brownish fluid on an unserviced transmission is absolutely ok. When it goes black is a bad sign. As said, give it some fresh ATF and change again in say 5k miles. A couple of changes and it will stay red.

Thanks for that daim. My thoughts exactly based on my xkr sealed for life gearbox.I probably won’t change the filter or the oil again in my lifetime but need to fit the option to the sump. I will take the pan to a local Welder and and have a plug fitted. Are these sumps the usual poor grade jag stainless? My xkr trans fluid looked similar to what I got today .

Use Time Serts for repairing the trans, more expensive than helicoils but far better in aluminium,

They aren't Jag grade steel. More so GM grade... They aren't stainless, as they are magnetic.

Dropped the sump off for a drain plug welding in this afternoon. £30 . Pick it up tomorrow, then I went to the yard and managed to drill the leftover stud out and re tapped it m10. Fingers crossed
