Default Overheating?

Driving my 90 XJS yesterday on Interstate about 85 degrees out and the temp. needle started to inch up into dangerous territory. No quite into the "danger zone" but very close. I shut it down and opened the hood to let it cool and started back on my way. Fortunatly a rain and cold front came through and the temp went back down just above the center neutral position. I think I avoided any damage but now I need some ideas on what steps I should take to cure the problem and avoid this happenening again. Any tips on what to do to fix the problem would be appreciatted. Thanks.

I'd consider the basics first:

Fan clutch, radiator cleaning, thermostats. Any recent work in these areas?

Is the aux elect fan working?

Cheers
DD

The electric fan IS working. I have not checked anything else. I have not worked on any of the other items mentioned. I have not had a problem since I bought it in february, it has never done it until it was hot outside. Thanks for the input.
