very nice, very very nice

Dukejag 08-14-2018 03:13 AM

Thanks Knares, I hope so.

Plan is to WAIT 6 weeks .. yep. 6 weeks (all i can do is droll over pictures, waiting for more) and fly down to the South Island and spend 4-5 days driving home, in the school holidays, (kids at grand parents) , we have accommodation worked out which is budget and staying in camp ground cabins, actually this is by choice as its much more enjoyable meeting people than staying in a motel / hotel, where you get to your room after dinner and jut sit there. Always people to speak with and have a few beer with. I do that enough with work.

All NZ dollars....$0.66 USD = $1NZD
Cost to transport is $1000+ and I have done the following calculations.
Cheap Holiday for you lot in USA and UK...

Flights $146 (for two)
Ferry $283
Accommodation $300
Fuel $600
Food $300
Spending money $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Total $1629 - so the way I told the wife its a $600 + for a holiday, road trip . At least we are getting something for our $$$
Cant wait to drive the Gentle Annie Highway... might use more gas than I expect as I have a very heavy shoe... might have to take my shoe off or let the wife drive... really not! - ok some of the way, main highways...
At least we get a holiday and enjoy the car for this money, better than just waking up and driving it down the driveway. As long as we don't brake down!
Will join the AA just in case!

Plan is Christchurch, Wellington, Ohakune (Gentle Ann drive, a NZ must ) to Napier, Taupo - home Auckland.

Based on 15miles / gallon (UK) = 19l / 100km
1202 km = 228l
$2.6 per L = $593
Now what is the range for a V12 beast? Need to check gas stations as the are not located on every corner.
Photos will be added... with the appropriate scenery of course.

You should do better than 15 MPG; 19 Lt/100km. If, big if, the car is in decent ignition order 18+ MPG is quite possible at a steady 80 MPH. It is the acceleration and traffic that kills the MPG; but of course, if you have a V12 then why not use it...
You should get 300 miles between fills with a 60 mile reserve. When the low fuel light comes on, you have about 50 to 60 miles IF it is adjusted properly.
Sounds just brilliant fun.

I guess you don't have much time, but it seems a pity to waste all those wide open roads down there and just shoot straight up to Wellington.
Cruising at about 100 kph, I can manage up to a fairly steady 20 mph US (not UK) or 12 km/l (sometime more if conditions are right). But that's at the good end--hills or speeding up/overtaking will drop that.

Robman25 08-14-2018 03:54 PM

I drove the Gentle Annies as part of the Targa Tour west to east this year, BRILLIANT!!!!
I also did it last year going east to west while doing Bangers to Bluff, this was in a XJ40 unfortunately that time it developed a shudder when cornering so I had to keep the speeds down. Turned out that the front wheel nuts had worked loose :(
80mph..... if only :(
We have only just been allowed 110klm/h on certain motorways here in nanny state.

Some Day, Some Day 08-14-2018 05:19 PM

110? Where can you go 110? (And you can bet your arse there are cops just waiting for you to drift over to 111....)

Robman25 08-14-2018 05:39 PM

The new expressways;
https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-z...and-roads.html

Some Day, Some Day 08-14-2018 05:55 PM

Grr. Heavy vehicles limited to 90. There's a section of the New Tomei Expressway here in Japan where the limit is 110, and because trucks are still limited to 90 here too, you're constantly stuck behind Truck A doing 90 trying to pass Truck B doing 89. The Waikato Expressway should be less busy, at least....

JigJag 08-14-2018 08:35 PM

I’m feeling lucky hearing these tales of low limits. We have an outer belt loop here. It circles the city and lets traffic bypass the city from the two major interstates that cross in the downtown area. Or that was the idea anyway. Habits die hard. People like what they know. Not a lot of traffic on it normally. 4 lanes. It’s 68 mi ( 108 km ) around and the limit on it is 70 mph ( 112 kph ). This is read by drivers in this area as the lower limit allowed for your speed.

Some Day, Some Day 08-14-2018 08:47 PM

The killer in places like NZ is that the open road is 100, and in town is 50, and there are sod-all motorways/expressways, so you're constantly hitting these small nothing towns with cops just waiting to gather some revenue from someone who doesn't slow down quiiiite enough.

Dukejag 08-15-2018 11:36 PM

I live in the country so am able to drive country roads and good speeds.
Often are doing 140km, just not for long stretches... but there is one thing we have in NZ that is good and that is radar detectors.. I have one in my car at all times and then use in my motorcycles.

Looking very good. Don't apologise about the number of pics.

Dukejag 08-16-2018 03:23 AM

Next question... I have paid $1000 deposit, ready to pay the outstanding funds, would it be wise to have it inspected by a car inspection company?
Obviously yes...so that is stage two...

Dukejag 08-16-2018 03:49 AM

Would you trust this car to do 1200km home?

Some Day, Some Day 08-16-2018 05:20 AM

Difficult to say - there could be something nasty lurking that you can't tell.
But if it is mechanically as solid as it looks on the outside and in the engine bay, the answer is absolutely yes. My '92 has done large distances around Japan, and Grant's driven his all around (literally) Australia. Doing 1200 km is what this machine is made for.
That said, I would still recommend a South Island tour of several hundred km just so you can be near ChCh and the seller if IF it has problems. And get that AA or whatever pre-purchase inspection.

Looking at the new set of photos, it looks to me like the seal's coming away from the driver's A pillar. Shouldn't be too hard to fix. Also might see if the seller can send you photos of the area at the base of the windscreen so you can check for any paint bubbling.
