so what to do-no one has a tps switch?
lucas part # 73384-1992 xjs v12. Do I buy a 3 prong and splice it into my end that goes into the cars harness?

Do you have the later red TPS or the older black type? Have you looked for part number EAC9634 ? It's the newer red type. Should still be available. Has three wires... Cheers DD |

It should be DAC7427 if it's a 5.3L facelift car.

Maybe the physical mounting? Electrically they are connected identically with the same voltage range on the wiper. Or perhaps they just changed supplier?

well looks like this car will not get any use the rest of the year. hard to think a electrical part that does need replacing no one has. as far as mounting it looks the same as early years-its the way it connects to the cars harness that is way different. the connector still has only 3 wires but some of the tps switches I have seen with that connector use 5 or 6 wires.

I believe the 6 wire switches were for the My94-96 6.0L. It used a twin track potentiometer. One track sends position signal to the ECM and the other to the transmission controller. (The 4 speed tranny was electronically controlled) Cheers, Allan |

Shoot, if the electrical operation/range is the same that's the most important part. I wonder if Kirby's book makes any mention of 9634 vs. 7427 and backwards/forwards usage? Cheers DD |

When you say connecting to the harness is different, are you talking about the plug itself?
If so and the potentiometer itself physically fits, then yes, you should be able to just splice your existing plug to the new pot. The outputs are the same, just look on the wiring diagrams to see if the wire colours changed. This is a pic of EAC9634 which is available. Attachment 54122 Cheers, Allan |

If you wanna use the car rather that wait don't give up too soon. My gut feeling is that an earlier TPS can be used.....perhaps with minimal fiddling about. Might be worth some research. Heck, I used a Mustang TPS on my XJS. hard to think a electrical part that does need replacing no one has. When a part goes to "NLA" status it's usually because of A) lack of demand where continued production isn't justified or B) the manufacturer/supplier has gone belly up. as far as mounting it looks the same as early years-its the way it connects to the cars harness that is way different. the connector still has only 3 wires but some of the tps switches I have seen with that connector use 5 or 6 wires. Black = Ground Green = 5v when ignition on Red = wiper, should vary between about .3v to 4.5v depending on throttle position. Cheers, Allan |
Hi all,
I'm hoping to revive this thread. My 92 XJS wants a new TPS - Throttle Position Sensor (Potentiometer). The older EAC9634 with the 3 prongs is widely available, but the correct sensor for the 92 is impossible to get - it has a blue / green plug and is DAC7427. The DAC is still 3 wire with a different connector as far as I can tell, so I'm wondering if anyone has successfully done the splice with the EAC into the DAC plug with it actually working. I see discussion about it, but no stories on it working. I'm running with a bad one at the moment. Check Engine is on and it doesn't run great, but it runs. My guess is many of us 92 XJS have the same issue. I thought I'd figure this out on my own and report to you all, but here I am. |

Just a question for future reference. How do you know if the TPS is going bad?
I haven't learned about my 90 model diagnostics yet. So if it throws a code how do I retrieve it? I have a code reader with OBD II and an assortment of OBD 1 plugs. Is there even a diagnostic plug to plug into on a 90? |

Maybe my shade tree method will work up there.
