I'm curious how many of you have had to replace the water pump. I've seen it on CarFax reports on quite a few 2010s. I'm wondering how common the issue is?

 

I assume it is because of a faulty design or batch of pumps:

Cooling System Concerns

Issue: The Customer reports a low coolant message on the instrument pack
display. A coolant leak is identified from the area around the coolant pump
pulley. This affects 5.0L engines only on XJ, XF, XK.

Cause: Internal sealing failure.

Action: Revised water pumps are available to order through Unipart, part number C2D 20660.

 

Changing the water pump on 2010XKs seems to be quite common. My neighbor who has 20,000 miles on a 2010XK just replaced his. I would say that if it hasn't been replaced it will need it in the near future. Hopefully the replacement pump is not the same design, but who knows?

 

Do the 2013's have the revised pumps? Does the XKR have the same pump? If I had a 2010-11 going out of warranty I would look into getting it replaced under warranty.

 

It looks like that revised pump was fitted from VIN B44051 which is part way through the 2011 MY.

That has since been superseded by C2Z21781 which was used from VIN B47448 (mid 2012 MY).

The very latest engines use C2Z28248.

Only one pump option is listed for the 5.0L so I assume the XK and XKR have the same pump.

 

I just checked a CarFax Reports on 14 2010 XKs on Auto Trader, all under 30K miles.
Of 14 cars, five listed replaced water pumps and of the other nine, three didn't have enough maintenance histories to know one way or the other.

 

I have 38K miles on my 2010. It just went out of manufacturers warranty in October.

Haven't had any issues with the water pump.

 

I don't think it's the end of the world if needing replacement. I've heard quotes of $800 through Jaguar and my local independent Jaguar mechanic mentioned $300. (who knows what type of pump he is using?)

 

Sounds about right. $300 at an independent converts to $800 in Jag Dealer bucks. Somebody ought to invent a currency conversion calculator that does this.

 

Although I don't own a 5.0L X150, I recently bought a CPO 2013 XJ 5.0L SC. Last week I took it in for its 30K mile service and as I was aware of this issue mentioned that I smelled coolant occasionally. The water pump was leaking so my dealer replaced it under warranty.

I have 10,000 miles on my 2012 and the pump has not been replaced. Vin. B48238 . So I'll just wait and see what the future brings. No smell and no visible leaks . Being it's a CPO car hopefully I won't need to get a fix but you never know.

 

My 2010 xk had water pump replaced in 2012. According to the dealer it now has the most upgraded pump. I have had it for a yr with no issues, still under full warranty until end of december then 2yr cpo.

 

My 2010 XKR has 6700 miles. The pump has not been replaced, however, I do smell coolant when I shut the car off. Must be minor as no fluid seems to be missing from the coolant reservoir. I am keeping a very close eye on it but with the amount of driving I do it is hard to tell. Probably will take it to a dealer sometime to see if they need to replace the pump under the CPO warrranty.

 

I just had the water pump on my XJ replaced under warranty and, like axr6, still smell coolant after I shut off the engine. Maybe that's normal?

Usually this is a fairly messy job and antifreeze will spill as the remove hoses and the pump itself. It is hard to dry it all up so my bet is there is residue which is being blown around when you drive and when the fans turn on. It should dissipate in a week or so but if it doesn't take it back to the dealer. Also check your floor to see if any is spilling out. As long as the coolant light doesn't come on you should be OK. Also keep an eye on the coolant tank and top up if necessary as there may still be air in the system.

 

This might be helpful if you are diligent and concerned about the water pump. Periodically look at the very front of your engine compartment for little white dots/specs which are stains of the leaking coolant. Even if it is the slightest leak, it will get blown around the engine compartment and land somewhere.

Wow, so pleased I found that Jaguar Forum members on this site are so knowledgeable like Corvette Forum members. Very educational blogs and write ups - thanks to all on this site. New to Jaguar after selling my 2012 C6 Corvette and fell in love with the XKR's from day one.


I purchased a 2011 XKR Black Pack from a very reputable Jaguar Dealer in Palm Desert, CA in November. Love the car and in show room condition with only 24,000 miles - return Lease from one owner local doctor.


HERE IS WHAT HAPPENDED TO ME YESTERDAY


Took the Jaguar out for a short 4 mile trip from my home. When I returned home, 4 miles later, as I was pulling into my garage Message Center popped up " ENGINE OVERHEATING ". Thank god I just returned home to my garage when this occurred. Immediately shut off car - I agree after reading the Blogs and Manual - no way would I let car run for 5 minutes. Wow, glad that message popped up when I was back home and recognized it and shut off vehicle at once.


I immediately called my dealer and he recommended having the vehicle Towed in Friday morning which I scheduled.


I have the Car Fax report when I purchased the vehicle last month. No major work ever done in vehicles history including never replacing Water Pump. I will be mentioning that to my Dealer service center's attention tomorrow.


Just one last note, I believe I smelled a little coolant when I popped the hood. However their was no leaking of coolant anywhere to be seen, also engine was not in anyway showing signs of overheating. Temperature under hood seemed normal however the radiator Fan was not engaging which I found weird as well if the car was overheating. I was also reading in the Forum our years XKR does not message you for "Low Coolant" ?


Still have two full years left on Manufactures Warranty through 12/16 and one year after that from DCP. 2011's had the Jaguar Platinum 5 year warranty and Service - best offered that year for Jaguar I understand.

Welcome Vtech.......It seems as if no one escapes water pump issues on our cars. It's kind of scary and I'm still waiting for the dreaded day. I'm currently approaching 8,000 miles on my 2010XK (purchased last year with 4,800 miles) and I check regularly for any signs of seepage. I have a 6 year extended warranty. I was told by my service manager that the water pumps can fail as early as 5,000 miles. It's not comforting to know that anytime I travel a distance from my home, I can be expecting a possible tow to the dealer. You lucked out by being close to home. It would be a good idea to make sure you ask for the latest water pump available. Check your work order after your repair is completed for the water pump part number.
