Hi all,
First off, thanks to all who post, undertaking preventative maintenance on my 2009 XKR (4.2 S/C) is only happening because of the posts on this forum. Very grateful.
I am mid-way through teardown on the vehicle, with the end goal to replace the valley hoses, water pump, thermostat, tensioner, pulley and belt. Also will be changing the S/C belt, spark plugs, transmission pan/filter and fluid.
All of this is mainly for preventative reasons, as I hope to take a longer trip this summer.
The car sits all winter here in Calgary, so I still have some time to get through this!!
I'm pretty happy with where I am at BUT - I have run into a "how the heck" moment.
Reading the shop manual (Section 18.50.15) and GKubrak's post "4.2 Supercharger & throttle body elbow removal advice". I'm still head scratching.
The large aluminum charge air coolers - how the heck do I get them out/off, OR, don't I need to remove them to remove the supercharger, to get to the valley hoses?
Here is where I am at Coolant drained and most/all necessary hoses disconnected I believe this has to be disconnected also?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Remove charge air coolers - to remove s/c - YES or NO and any advice
Throttle body elbow and the disconnect of the linkage in the photo above - cannot find that referenced anywhere
4.2 supercharger intakes are an absolute nightmare to disassemble (and reassemble). You must use wrenches, sockets, extensions, floppy drives and push your hands where they don't fit to takeeverything off, one piece at a time. Have bandages handy to stop all the bleeding from your fingers and hands afterwards.
Thanks Cee Jay, yes to the bandages, yes to all kinds of different attachments, wrenches, sockets etc. Man, some of the hose clamps are ridiculous.
However, any insight to the removal of the charge air coolers, I can see some of the Torx screws but for sure not all - am I missing something in the disassembly process?
I worked on my son's 4.2 a couple years ago but haven't seen a 4.2 since. The throttle body needs removal along with anything that touches it. There is an adapter thing between the intercoolers and the blower, that needs removal from both sides. The screws can be had from between and above, I THINK. The intake from the TB also needs removed from the blower and from the block on each side as it's attached with bolts or screws. Every part is get-to-able, but sometimes in weird order, and always a pain in the butt.
You should look into getting a workshop manual, it's a download. If you can't find one, I may be able to locate the one I had for the kid, but not sure where. It'd still be a download though.
Thanks for the support. I do have the manual but for some weird reason, it is not searchable. Anyway, I have the procedures.
I think I have it sorted in my mind - you have to remove the T/B elbow, which at this point in time seems like 4 Torx bolts and two regular bolts ( not yet sure how to get to the bottom Torx bolts). With the EGR valve disconnected from the exhaust manifold (and all other pipework and electrical connectors disconnected), I think I can then remove the T/B elbow.
If that is correct, then I am trying to figure out how to get to the third supercharger bolt (the one toward the rear of the s/c), I can and have loosened the two front. With the third bolt removed, I can then remove the S/C (coolant manifold is removed). Which brings me to the question about the actuator I posted the picture about. Do I just remove the two bolts in the second picture to get to the S/C third bolt ?
Hope this is clear what I am asking ? Just remove these to get to the third S/C mounting bolt ?
The rear supercharger bolt isn't really reachable with the entire intake plenum in place. I've always removed everything removable because if it is together, it won't pull out far enough to get to the rest.
Remember, it's been two or three years since I did all this and I'm old and.... uh..... oh, forgetful.
