Engine Sounds...and shifter?
Ok, 2008 XKR 4.2L SC.
Starting to pay attention to some things as I learn what is normal. Side Quest: I removed the license plate lights, cleaned them all out and replaced the bulbs with LED. Huge difference. Three things, one not super concerning. 1. That nice little corner of the JGate for D occasionally goes to sport mode showing 1-2-3... on the dash. Sometimes when I put it in gear and I don't notice until i press the gas and she is 'jumpy'. Sometimes, but more rarely, at random. I tend to think my hand is resting on the shifter but I don't move it. 2. After reading a few threads, I waited until I was on E and added the Techron high mileage cleaner to a full tank of Shell premium. Not saying it is the cause, as it should have the opposite effect, but my B1&2 LTFT have gone from zero at idle, .78 to 1.78ish under load to 2.7x to 3.13 a few times hitting 3.98. Haven't touched anything else. The obvious reason for LTFT going up (+) is a vacuum leak, which leads to... 3. Thought I heard some "air like" sounds when I started the car the other day. So I started listening for everything. Got home from an errand, turn off the car and removed the engine cover. Of course I put the Oil Cap back on and restarted the engine. Recorded the video below. Need to lean on the experts here. Hoping the audio is clear enough. Put my hand on the SC and there is some vibration. From both sides in the gap where the covers are sounds a bit 'knocky' but that may be normal. Anyone hear anything out of the ordinary? https://t.co/AT8rweid7u |
Sounds like the air line to the pass side of the supercharger is leaking - there are three tubes (black plastic) that break up. Check all three - the one with the arrow is one of the three.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...610bae85a2.jpg went out and looked again. Traced it to the split and both runs to the SC and Sensor. All seems solid. I may have to fire up a cigar sometime this week and do a smoke test on the system. |
Sounds OK to me.

Except my child is 17. What I wouldn’t give to have one of y’all nearby. Of course after the 5th “Hey, when you have time, wanna come over and peek at this with me?” you’d have me blocked. |
If there was a bar tap in the garage...

No tap, but the garage fridge exists for the sole purpose of housing beer and the wife’s mt. dew. Freezer houses all the liquors best served chilled, and a couple frozen pizzas for…emergencies. |
Excellent!

My neighbor has a purpose built ‘garage’ (i.e. bar).
I can walk over, not fear driving under the influence. Since I repaired his margarita machine I am guaranteed free margaritas for life! He and his wife are the most friendly, open, loving couple you will ever get to know. This garage has two margarita machines, popcorn machine, beer-keg refrig, a pretty extensive bar; memorabilia form musicians-many living in the area. On any weekend evening there may be anywhere from 1 (me) to 30+ people visiting. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...abfa607142.jpg image not loading and linking does not work! wj |

Oh. And nobody has chimed in on the J Shifter thing.
Is it normally that sensitive? |

I'm trying my best to be "careful". Some have delicate "feelings".

I think you are looking for things here that do not exist, firstly mentioning the fuel trims is great but there is nothing wrong with a 3 percent long term fuel trim - if you took this to a garage they would laugh at you.
At idle fuel trims should be at zero becasue the car is doing nothing - or very close to zero percent - when you are driving anything that has the occasional burst going to plus / minus 5 percent of so is fine - if they go to plus or minus 10/15 percent then you have problems. The 4.2 should be quiet with a distinct ticking of the fuel injectors at idle - its normal. The 5.0 uses direct injection at much higher pressure and is far louder. |
