is the factory premium, Alpine (2005) cd player capable of playing mp3s?

My '04 won't.

Nor will my 05. Burnt CD's yes, MP3's no.

Do any of you use the AVC that increases the audio volume as you accelerate? The setting goes from 1 (strongest) to 5 (weakest) and is accessed by holding down the audio on button for two seconds.

I always wanted a negative scale from -5 to -1, so that when you accelerate the audio gets quieter to let you enjoy the sound of the engine and exhaust... Not like those Audis and BMW that play you a fake exhaust noise through the speakers in sport mode :)

Simon - I can't guarantee it will work, but maybe if you swap the battery leads over (black to positive and red to negative) you would get the desired effect ??
