Default Head removal

My 99 XK8 Conv needs a valve work on the left side so I need to remove the head. Already took both cams off. Removing the left exhaust manifold looks really difficult. Almost seems like pulling the engine might be required. Anyone with experience removing the exhaust manifold?

I always remove the head with the manifold attached- disconnect the manifold at the cat converter.

Default Good plan

Thank you. Sounds like a good plan. Just below the manifold I see 4 bolts which are basically manifold to exhaust system. Is that where you are suggesting, or further down the line?

those are what you are looking for- liberally oil them about an hour before removing, they like to snap. Also, it is way easier to remove if you unbolt the exhaust brackets from the transmission and allow the exhaust to drop as well.

Great advice, Thanks. WD40? Or 10W40? :-)

oil or grease- you want it so help the nut slip while it spins. Wd-40 works if you are removing right away

The best nut buster is Aerokroil by Kano Labs, a polymer penetrant. Look on the web for it, not normally sold in stores. It will remove manifold nuts that are so rusty they are not recognizable.
