Default I changed tranny fluid and filter.. (question)

I just had the fluid and filter changed on my tranny.

Question:

After doing some forum reading, I came across a few threads where people mentioned NOT changing the filter.

My car just hit 50K
Any reason why I would not want to change the filter?

My local trans shop did the job. I believe he used the Mercon V
Said there were no metal chunks, some fine particles, but nothing to worry about.

Car feels great.

I would change the filter, can't think of a logical reason for not doing so. I've changed mine twice. But I would go one step further while you have the filter off and replace the main pressure valve with either the ZF upgrage or the transgo version.

Thank you.
However, the job was completed and the pressure valve was left alone.

What fluid did you use?

I used the Mercon V.
Anything to be concerned about the Mercon V?

Everything I have read said to use mercon SP and NOT mercronV, they are different animals.

I'm hoping I misunderstood the tech.

The shop that serviced my car is a transmission shop that's been there for 35 years. I'm counting on their expertise to know what belongs in my car.

I simply went there and asked if they service / tuneup the trans for my car. The owner said he's done plenty of them over the years.
Quoted me 150.00 for the filter and fluid change.
Couple hours later, he called and said it was ready. I asked about the condition of the tranny and what he put in.
I really didn't understand him. I'm now hoping he DIDN'T say Mercon V

Indeed. But the transmissions are too. Newer cars hav the 6HP26, and I believe it's been pretty much put to bed that Mercon SP is just fine in there.

Older '8s use the 5HP24. Discussion on alternative fluids to ZF's Lifeguard 5 liquid gold has rumbled on for some years now. There are several OEM versions of the specified LT71141 (VW, Peugeot, etc.) and some fluids have appeared claiming compatibility.

I'm not sure whether Mercon 5 is one of them, but not all Mercon 5s are the same. See this from one of the BMW forums: Becasue I did my research on this more than three years ago.

A concern might be whether the two fluid types mix OK.

One thing for sure, there's certainly plenty of reading and opinion out there
