Ignition key hard to remove

My 98, I put it in Park, turn the key off, but have to forced (slam) shift lever toward P in order finish turning and extraction of the key.

Can someone point me to a write up on this ? I’ve tried search but nothing seems to match.
Thanks so much

Have you checked the lights on the shifter as you put your car in Park? Does the "P" light up? The ECU "knows" you are in Park as per a switch. Once it "knows", it sends a CAN message to the shift light module to light up P. If you put the car in Park, but there is no light, chances are the switch has become unreliable, and likely needs to be replaced. Separately, I believe the whole shifter plate needs to be properly centered for all the switches to work correctly. To my knowledge, this is not a snap-in type of setup, it requires a bit of finesse to properly line up. Has any work been done in that are recently? Chances are these switches are just aging like everything else...

Best of luck, keep us posted.

Problem with J Gate module

I’ve dis assembled 3 of these to make 1 working unit so maybe these old photos below will help.

It’s relatively straightforward to take apart and Rev. Sam has a youtube video to get access.

It’s been a while since I did this but I think 2 units had a problem with the microswitch shown below

Jgate micro switch broken

Gang,
I have the j gate opened up and I see the rear micro switch lever has broken off. I’m not sure what it does. This is the 98 xk8 with the zf5hp24 transmission. The car shows “P” when in park. The car starts and drives, not throwing any OBD codes.

I was changing out the indicator plate with an aluminum plate and just s I was ready to button it up, I see the snapped off lever,

Good switch at top, broken lever on bottom switch

Seems like this is a common problem. I’m assuming it’s the neutral safety switch.

Neutral safety switch (micro switch)

Anyone just replaced the micro switch for the neutral safety switch or the “not in park” micro switch? My 1998 xk8 the tang is broken off the nss.

Replacement plate with two micro switches MJA4940AG.

Big bucks to buy the replacement plate that comes with the two switches MJA4940 AG.

The folks at mouser.com are likely to have the appropriate replacement microswitch. Hopefully someone can cross-reference the correct part number for you....

Jon,
Good info on mouser.

Thank you

So this is the exact same microswitch as the infamous one in the door latch assemblies? The metal arm on the microswitch in the photos above sure looks a lot shorter than the metal arm on the microswitch in the door latch assemblies....

Then again, maybe that is what broke off....

Johnken,
That’s perfect. I’ll figure out the NO set of contacts, isolate the NC, drill put the old rivets and ...? Maybe I can find some screws and lock nuts to install new one.
thank you

Jon89, sure did look the same to me last time I was in there. Mouser has several different arms on display in photos once you get to this switch in their catalog (same manufacturer).

For those who never worked with this switch before, the arm is quite easily bent to specific applications.

LTD, you're welcome. Let us know how it goes.

John

Thanks for the confirmation. Let's hope it fixes the issue....
