Ignition problem

Having an intermittent starting problem. Car will start fine one day and when i turn the key nothing no lights on dash completely dead, after several attempts every thing lights up and car starts. Key turns fine no sticking.

It may be more than an ignition problem. Remove and clean the battery cables, both ends and the engine ground strap at the right rear of the engine- bell housing to frame.

Ignition

Thanks i will try that first hope it turns out to be that simple.

Location of Engine Earth Strap

I agree with RJ237's suggestion for checking earths. Have you checked the battery negative cable when you get a bad start - some have reported it gets hot.

For the Engine ground/earth strap - that's a PITA to reach. See thread link below. In particular see #3 where frankc has a story on this particular part.

I just had this problem on my 97 cable from the starter to the alternator was damaged connection to starter wouldn't screw back tight, new starter now it starts right up. Good luck

It could also be the bit that surrounds the key when you put it into the ignition. Sometimes they stick and the immobilizer stays on. Bit of contact cleaner around there should help.

Plus one though on the earth connections. Ohhh just noticed I am mentioned in David Yau's posting. I need not say anymore. :D

Whenever I have a bad day on the Jag (it wouldn't start today as I found hydraulic oil somehow got onto the positive battery cable connector in the bus).... I just go to your blog and I feel not so bad.

Check the connections in the HPPM (see item 5)

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...cb7d8fe06e.jpg

The connections are known to loosen and also for the cable terminals to break up ....... causing intermittent starting difficulties.

Another one for your checklist.

Clearly there are right now 531,000 X100’s right now unable to start due to battery/connection problems.

Which is surprising, considering that about 23,500 were built.

23,500? I wonder how many are left on the road still?

Just googled it https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...26/#post497952

Looks like my figures were a load of rubbish. Probably safest to ignore everything I say.

Always.
