Place to mount fire extinguisher in a coupe
 

I'd like to mount a fire extinguisher in my XKR coupe.

Does anyone have any recommendations on where it can be mounted.
I was thinking of on the removable section over the battery in the trunk but I am open to suggestions.

Any photos would be appreciated.

For the Jaguar Fire Extinguisher (available as an accessory), the carrier bracket is designed to fit on the front of the passenger seat to be easily accessible in the event of fire.

When supplied on the early XK8/XKR, it was fitted in the luggage compartment on both Coupe and Convertible.

Unobtrusive but not very practical.

We've mounted them directly to the seat like the OEM Jag ones, but i put mine on the drivers side.

Is it a requirement in Australia?

I see Clarke was lucky to be carrying one yesterday when his XJ6 caught fire!

Not a legal requirement for a street car, but you need to have them fitted if you do any competition stuff like trackdays, supersprints, etc...

Last year 34by151 & myself did a supersprint with the Jaguar Drivers Club, as well as competing in the Snowy Mountains 1000, so they had to be fitted.

It's a good idea to have one on board, as Clarke found out today. I have a 2nd one in the boot of the XJR too, just in case.

FYI the mounting brackets for the seat are no longer available to buy separately from Jaguar, but they will sell you an extinguisher with the bracket. James (34by151) made up a couple of brackets from some flat aluminium sheet that did the job, basically copied the OEM bracket & then we fitted some locally sourced extinguishers.

By bolting it to the seat, it moves with the seat & is no obstruction to the seat movement whatsoever, not once has it gotten in the way.

Cambo, can you take a picture for us? This is a modification I've been thinking about off and on over the years. Since I'm vain ;), I'd want the extinguisher and bracket to look very integrated, stylish, and natural to the interior. I would probably mount it drivers side like you mention since I am very tall and have plenty of room there, and then the kids are not tempted to mess with it when they ride with me either. I think it is a good idea to have it close at hand since the faster you can get to it and use it, the better off you are.

I'm looking at the same thing for the XKR I bought last week. Probably going to do a trunk mount.

I didn't think much about a fire extinguisher until I had a truck fire in my F-150 on I-90 while traveling across country (moving) from Washington state to Alabama 14 years ago. By a stroke of extreme luck I had the fire extinguisher from under the kitchen sink on the floor of the cab (along with the dish detergent and trash bags and everything else from under the sink). I blew a fuel line and the extingusher was not enough to put out the fire but it along with another from some stranger who stopped slowed it down enough that my truck (and me and the 2 dogs) did not burn up completely before the fire company got there.

Ever since then I keep a fire extinguisher in every car. I'm not a fan of safety laws and regulations but from a common sense point of view I think everyone should keep a fire extinguisher in the car.

I prefer a vehicle fire suppression system, if you park your car in an ATTACHED GARAGE AT HOME.

That way, if the fire starts in the garage, you don't lose the house or your life.The same on the road,it automatically detects the fire in the engine bay and puts it out.

This is an example, most local race and performance shops can get you a good price.

From experience,those small in vehicle extinguishers don't work well as you think.You will need a medium size, like in your kitchen.

I think the Jaguar cabin mount is better, but if mounting in the trunk is desired then
mounting parallel to the trunk latch lip might be a better idea than further into the trunk.

A fire extinguisher is only useful if you can reach it.

Are there pre-drilled mounting points in the seats, and do the seats have to come out?

I have a larger HALON bottle to mount. These were declared surplus when we vacated
a data centre so I made time to unscrew them from the walls during the move :)

The problem is going to be the mass since they weigh somewhere near 20 pounds.

I've put mine in the boot (trunk). With my creaky back I reckon if I need it in a hurry it will be easier/quicker to access than having to bend down in the passenger footwell :icon_wink:

Only "problem" with this position is there is only the boot side carpet/liner to secure the carrier to but it seems to be OK. I did try mounting it horizontally at the rear where there is a steel plate to take self tappers but it was a tad intrusive and would get in the way of luggage.

This particular unit is a genuine Jaguar part and only £18 from ebay

I'll try to take some photos when I get home next week.

Not sure about the earlier cars (X308 or X100) but the later models mentioned in the picture GGG posted do have the holes already drilled in the front of the seat to take the bracket.

It's just a flat sheet of metal that bolts to the existing holes in the seat base under the cushion cover, then the extinguisher bracket bolts to the sheet.

Wow my seats look pink :(

You'd almost think they were posted Down Under..

Trunk-Mounted Fire Extinguisher
 

I just finished mounting a 2.5 lb HalGuard (halon) fire extinguisher in the trunk of my 2005 XKR coupe, under the left rear fender. I used the H3R NB300 "Extreme Duty" quick-release bracket, securing it with 6 sheet metal screws and 2 1"-long 1/4"x20 bolts with 1/4" nylon spacers. The bottom of the extinguisher is held in place by a metal rod that fits into a notch on a nylon bracket attached to the extinguisher; the top is held in place with a quick-release pin attached to red "PULL TO RELEASE" flag. Hope I never have to use it, but glad I have it just in case!
