Rust bubbles

Just found small bubbles in paint on lower rear fender. Assume they are rust. What should I do?

Rust bubble through the paint on the outside near the fenderwells generally means the rust is all the way through the outer sheet metal.

Rust likely started on the inside of the panel at a gap or joint where moisture (with dissolved salts) is held against the panel.

If small, there is a VERRRRRRYYYY slim chance the rust bubble started in a paint defect on the front side of the panel and the bubble can be knocked off, the metal cleaned up and be fixed with a little filler and paint touched up. A body shop could tell you for sure.

Rust is irreversible and the damage is done. If it started on the inside, more than likely the metal in the area will have to be cut off and a patch panel welded in and repainted.

+1
Had exactly this on my 2001 XKR. Just looked like a handful of surface paint blisters. I have a truly fantastic body shop locally. Took it in and just as you say a large section of metal was completely rusted through.
My guy did a fantastic invisible repair job - respray entire rear wing panel and also attended to a few other dings and blemishes - £500 total. Looks perfect.

If you've got paint blisters in that spot my advice is don't leave them or try a home fix.

I tried to sand down and repaint and treat the inner wing, that lasted a year before I had to cut the rot out.

See the full torture here.
