Should a XK8 or XKR be my first car..?
 

I've always liked Jaguars and I saw the XK8 and XKR for sale and really liked them..

XK8- 2001 Jaguar XK8 in Duarte, CA- 7874216 at carmax.com

All I really want to know is if they're reliable, and if the maintenance cost is high.

I'm not sure how much the insurance would cost, but I'll also put a Viper 5901 alarm system on this.

In regards to your question above, the 2001 is WAY overpriced. If you can afford the 2005, that would be the much better car between the two. In 2003 Jaguar made a bunch of changes to the car. the 2003+ cars are much better cars in my opinion, although in the older cars, once you've changed the tensioners, water pump, and thermostat they are just about as reliable.

Insurance is going to be steep for a 16 year old, especially if you get an XKR. It has 400 horsepower.

I found many on eBay motors, so I might go with that. So I should get the XK8? And is the navigation system any good? I couldn't find any videos showing that on YouTube.

I mean if I should go with the XKR. Sorry about the double.

I really like the XKR but the supercharger whine is a bit annoying haha... I wouldn't mind it.. I was wondering if the suspension soaks up bumps or is it stiff? I'm not sure how many changes the R has over the 8?

That engine bay of the 2005 model looks like it has done 160,000 miles and has been maintained by an Indy. I also see some corrosion.

I looked at the 2005 XKR out of curiosity since I have one. I have to say that I am always deeply suspicious of adverts that have several pictures of the lovely condition of the rear seats (which nobody ever sits on!) and then strangely forget to include photos of the all-important driver's seat.

I also agree that the engine bay looks untidy, but I don't really see how you can assume it's been maintained by an indy.

Looks like there are traces of oil even on the intercoolers. This will never happen at the jaguar dealer as they try to work in a clean way, with clean tools and hands.

The 2005 seems a bit on the low side but at least looks very clean externally. Normally when I see photos posted by dealers there are lots of exterior from all different angles, many interior shots, and also several engine bay shots. When I was scrolling through the 46 photos posted of the 2005, it was not until the very end where there was one photo of the engine bay. It may mean nothing but I found that curious.

The interior looked pretty clean (at least from the angles they took) except for a missing rubber liner in the coin tray in front of the shifter. Also, there was some weird staining at the overhead console homelink buttons (indicating hydraulic leak at the convertible top latch?).

Still, the mileage is not all that bad and if the car checks out it might be worth considering.

I forgot to opine that if this is going to be a first car for a 16 year old, there are plenty of reasons to be starting with a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic and then progress upwards. But what the hey--here in SoCal it is not unusual to see parents buy new BMW 3's for their little darlings as a sweet-16 present.

Wow, thanks guys..! :) Yeah haha my sister got a X6 as her first car and I wanted to start out small.. I wanted a SUV but I hate how slow some are. I like the Lincoln MKX but it's like whatever now..

the 2005 xkr..covers missing on the suspention wiring.twin tail pipes chrome bits and pieces..manky roof interior..engine bay dirty..what we engish call..done up like a dogs dinner..and i agree about the drivers seat lack of pictures..also i dont have a problem with chrome bit but this looks dodgy.

my first car was a 99 chevy Suburban that i could beat the crap out of. Which is good, bc with the 5.7L v8 it was quicker than you would expect a yacht like that to be. fits 9 people for road trips, 4x4 for offroad fun. Probably the best car ever for a young kid. Very safe for when you crash, and chances are you will. Cheap to fix, PLUS once you drive something that big, you can drive anything. I dont think anyone should start off with a nice car. just my .02

I don't see any corrosion on that first 05 xkr, the upper shock mounts use orange bushings, that may be what you are referring to. The homelink is extremely dirty, guess the detailer didn't look up! The rest of the car appears in really good coniditon using the pictures as a go-by.

So is the ride on the bumpier sport side, or soft and soaks up bumps? I expect the XKR to have a rougher suspension.. right? And whats the button by the S on the J shifter? Like in this picture:
