Squeeling when cold
Hi all.
Just bought a lovely XKR but when cold there's a squeal from the belts. Is it likely just a pair of belts or something more sinister? Thanks. |
It could also be idler or tensioner pulley, even harmonic balancer, water pump, alternator. A stethoscope is handy for locating the source. Also try removing the SC belt to eliminate that system.

The usual cause is a 'glazed' belt which has had coolant spilled on it but it could be a failing belt spring tensioner.

Go to the auto parts store in your neighborhood and get a spray can of belt dressing. Start the car and give the belt a one second squirt where it leads into a pully. if the squealing doesn't stop...it's not the belt

Thanks all. I used a stethoscope and all is quiet except for the power steeering pump. I have to change the tensioners so while I'm in there I'll change all pulleys, waterpump and belts.

+1 on idler. Release belt tension rotate pulley by hand. If not smooth as silk -you found it.
