Subwoofer Hole

Good Evening all.

I've just stripped out the inside of my newly acquired xk8 to recover the headlining in black suede and decided to do the rear shelf to match as it has faded and really shows the age of the car.

I want to fit a subwoofer to compliment the existing sound system, and i want it to sit in the factory space on the rear shelf. To save me painfully hunting around Halfords for a sub that fits, does anyone happen to know any that fit straight in?

I have the standard sound system (no amp), and am planning on taking a high level feed from the rear speakers into a small amp to run the sub. I'm not after 'banging' bass, just a little more than the standard system can give.

All help appreciated.

The Subwoofer is a unusual size. A 10" unit is a little too big. The actual size is about 9.5".

Some Stereo Shops will fit a 8" unit with a fill-in plate.

On my previous 97 XK8 Coupe, I enlarged the hole to take a Standard 10" Woofer which I fed from a 300 Watt Amp.

The Stock Unit with the Premium System uses a Dual Voice coil unit.

Thanks Paul,

What did you use to cut the hole. I'm not sure of the thickness of the material of the top of my head?

I used a hand "Nibble Tool" that clips a chip of metal about 3/16" at a time. Took a while to do the whole job.

3 Attachment(s)
We use a 8" JL Audio, what you have to bare in mind is the depth of the sub, gets very close to the tank!
We also used the blanking plate to make our adapter ring, worked well

Something else a lot of people forget.... Change the material covering the sub cover, hold it up to your lips and try and breath through it, if you cant, that means sound will struggle as well, when the subs were not fitted they were covered in a cheaper material and need to be redone

any 8" shallow mount sub will fit. just fabricate your own spacer ring from wood or steel.

but why not go for the original jaguar sub! they are not too expensive. some 150 USD.

Hi,

i am also thinking of updating my audio. i have 98 XK8 with the standard system. I'm not very proficient with audio equipment so have a few questions:

1. How easy is it to connect an amp? is there wiring & power already in the boot? is it just plug & play?

2. Is it worth updating the speakers?

3. Can i replace the speakers an just use the current wiring?

I am thinking of just letting the pro's do it but would like to try myself first
Any advice is much appreciated.

Cheers
