Water pump questions
I am about to change my water pump. It looks easy since I have both rad hoses off and am about to change the serpentine belt as well, but I have a couple of questions:
1/ The manual says to "discard the pulley bolts" > Why on earth would you discard perfectly good bolts ? Does anybody have any insight on this ? 2/ When replacing the pump, the torque spec for the bolts says: "8 NM plus 90 degrees " This seems very low but I can't find any updated TSB or anything like that...again , any input is appreciated from those with experience. When I get this done and refill the coolant I am ready for summer :D |
8 Nm converts to around 71 in.lb., which is correct. The fasteners are discarded because the additional 90 deg stretches the threads. I just reused with blue threadlock.

+1 with RJ. Don't worry those torque numbers work just fine Barry.

Fair enough ...thanks
I will be reusing the pulley bolts as well. They are torqued to 10 NM....can't imagine that this puts enough strain on them to stretch them LoL |
I had to buy a set of smaller sockets when I replaced my water pump. The heads are 8mm, tiny! Thus the low torque rating.
I didn't use a torque wrench, no leaks in 5 years and 30K miles. The thermostat housing was a different story though! |
all done and torqued properly ...no leaks
