What is this and where does it go?
I found this black knurled knob in the spare tire well of my 2001 XK8. It is about the same size and shape as the top of a can of WD-40. On the bottom it has an opening that fits over a small shaft and a spring keeper to keep it in place. I have no idea where it goes.
Firstly welcome to the forum.

I reckon it is the "topping" that sits on top of the spare wheel securing stud, and then the "floor" of the boot/trunk rests on it, thus NOT digging a hole eventually through the panel.
The S has a similar looking item that does just that.

The mounting stud in my car is a dual purpose item. The top end is a screwdriver blade, bent 90 degrees, I assume to pry out the wheel center cap or the tow ring cover. The black knurled knob doesn't fit on it. Maybe it doesn't even go to the car...
