Rotational Noise scraping on cold start that goes away X type 2004
Firstly I am a new member and thank you in advance for reading and pondering my question.
I have a 2004 x type 2004 just bought it. I am in the process of replacing the knock sensor but I have a more worrisome problem. On a cold start I get this noise that sounds like a scraping squeaking rotational noise originating from the drivers side of the engine.
When I start the car initially no noise. then a few seconds in it starts. Initially I thought it was related to the transmission so I put it in gear with the hand brake on and placed it in all reverse drive and park and got out of the car to listen. The sound existed in park and neutral and it continued for about a minute then disappeared.
I have no transmission codes, no shifting issues and the car runs fine.
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you
BG

Hi BG,
I would first consider the water pump idler/tension bearing...this is a weak point...crappy cheap a$# bearing here. Check it out with a mechanic's stethoscope or the old "ear on the handle of a screw driver" trick. I don't even bother replacing them now I just pop the rubber seals of the bearing, wash and regrease and replace.... lasts 5000 miles or so then repeat. When I have time I will fit an abec5 or 7 stainless bearing to the idler pulley... should help a lot.
Anyway, good luck...let us know what fix you find.

Back again :)
So Rob
Thanks for your advice.
I still have the noise it sounds like a rotational rattle that is effected by rpm noise almost like a belt noise. I went to a mechanic and he tightened up the bolts for the TC but told me the noise seemed to be coming from the transmission. The noise occurs about 30 seconds after start in park
Its weird as I have no engine codes the transmission is smooth. I am also not sure where the sound is coming from it seems to be close the firewall on the drivers side of the engine. The water pump pulley seems to be ok.
Any other ideas?
B

Hello Bgshaw
Did you ever find the cause of this problem? Mine has begun to do something that sounds just like what you described, its almost like a hydraulic pump running dry and it only does it when I first start my car and passes after a matter of about 30 seconds whilst driving
Many thanks
Edd
