maybe its a relay switch
I talked to a guy recently who had an 1996 xj6 with 198,000 miles on it and he warned me if all of a sudden it does nothing, it will probably be a relay switch in the upper right corner of the car, under the hood, under a little plastic cover, next to the windsheild wiper water tank. cost about 15 dollars for the relay and they are easy to change. I have one or two extra relays and just rotate them in place of the the ones in the car to see if it make a difference. This is one of the easiest repair you could possibly do, I would do this first.
