Winter tire sizes

Can a 2009 XFSC be fitted with 265/35?20 and 295/30/ 20 winter tires and will there be any difference in performance as compared to the 285 and 255 tire sizes that are recommended?

Conventional wisdom is to fit the narrowest tread possible that retains the original diameter.
