Default What to do about swirl marks?

Back when I bought the car the dealer may have had an unexperienced person buff the car. Now I have swirl marks all over. I would hate to take the car back to them because I know they are going to take more clear off. Is there something I can do that would not harm the clear coat?

Christo, I always remind my service guy, when I take it in for anything, (they like to wash and vacuum for the customer) that I would prefer no wash. If you take it in, I would inform him. Don't want this to happen again.

Yeah man, I am afraid to take it back to them - they want to make it right but I am afraid they are going to mess something up. I can see it now, next summer I will have clear coat flaking off the car!

They detailed the car when they put the car out on the lot, they detailed it again when I bought it and I dont know what they did when I took it in for service, but now there are swirl marks all over it. I dont think there is much more detailing this car can handle.

christo, I personally use 3M Perfect-It II. Great stuff. Can be used on all aspects of the car (paint, chrome, and glass). It works especially in getting rid of any fogging in the headlights. If you use a mechanical buffer with this stuff, all they caution you with is not keeping the buffer in 1 place on a corner as it has the potential to wear down into the paint. I've done my truck and car and never had any issues. Makes the vehicles come out sparkling and gets rid of all the marks that are not down into the paint.

Thanks Chris, I am probably going to be doing it by hand, and you know pictures will follow.

I have worked with the 3M rubbing compound in the past and I know how powerful the 3m products can be - they're some good quality stuff...

my dealer doesn't hand wash them after service, they run it thru the automatic car wash down the road. I'm sure it's hand detailed before putting it on the lot though.

I have used a ClayBar product (several to choose from) and thay really cleans and brighten the finish and works well on swirls..takes a little elbow grease though.

Yeah claybar is the way to go, come out like a mirror. Well last weekend I spent a day starring at the car and there seemed to be excess wax all over. SO bad that I could smudge it with my pinky with little force. I washed the car twice using some elbow grease and then ran my shammy (not sure how that is spelled) and I have removed most of them. The rest will probably need the ole elbow grease and buffer to remove. I have an orbital black and decker buffer and I just bought some new pads - so I will report how it goes if I get around to it.

There are so many dang leaves in my yard already!!!

If im not mistaken clay barring will do little to nothing to remove swirl marks it only is used to take all imperfections off that are stuck in the clear and cannot be removed by simple washing. To remove swirl marks you will need to use a polish, there are different abrasion levels of polish depending on how bad your swirl marks are. If you can post a good picture of them It would be easyer to advise you on how to get rid of them.

scuba is correct clay bar will not remove swirl marks....my dealer also loves automatic car washes which i hate, this past time somehow the car jockey ran my wheels into the curb scratching the left two but they will be fixed by the dealer

Default Absolutely the best swirl remover

I have a black X that looks great except for swirl marks and light scratches. We discovered a German Product called Menzerna that is recommended for Mercedes Benz finished because of the hardness of the clear coat. We had just done my SL500 and it worked wonders so we just moved over to the Jag.

Needless to say, the Jag has never looked so good. We used a Flex dual action and followed up with Menzerna polish.

All found at www.autogeek.net.

Lots of great reading there on all sorts of detailing products.

Highly recommended: Menzerna Intensive Polish..

I agree tradertcb... I have heard really good things about Menzerna too
You say you have a black X.....have you checked out poorboys black hole? Specifically designed for darker cars. Its a glaze with filler that covers any slight swirl marks and leaves a wet look shine....maybe top it off with nattys blue paste wax?

Default swirl marks

Dont use anything with fillers. It will look great right after the job is done, but after a wash or two the swirls will be back! You need to use a polish to get them out and then top with a sealant with wax on top of that.
