Default Body R1575 or R1576 for ser. 875427

Hi, I am a new member but have worked on family Jaguars, since 1975. I have had my 1961 e type since 1984, but just now requested my Heritage cert as I am restoring the car.

The stamped metal ID tag (with original engine R1573, and trans EB676JS, etc.) says the body is R1576, as does Heritage, but the bonnet (right side bracket) and riveted boot tag all say R1575. the car has never been really restored before, just maintained and driven.

Is it possible the metal ID tag was mistamped as R1576 when it should have been R1575? It seems unlikely that someone would have moved the tag from R1576 onto an otherwise perfectly running R1575 body and moved the engine, transmission and original paint colors too, right? What do you think?

There is a well documented run of OTS cars after outside bonnet locks that has switched body tags. Usually one number off like yours. Unfortunately the JHT will not recognize this although they have been aware of it for years. The North American archives would recognize this in the past but is no longer allowed to issue certificates. The tag was not miss-stamped but rather the wrong tag was laced on the body--which means there is a car running around (hopefully) with your body number!

Heritage, Thank you for the reply.

Does anyone know how, or if, this would affect its value? Is it therefore a non-matching numbers car, or like a mistamped penny even better because of unusual as-built history?

I don't intend to sell it soon, but would like to know the effect for insurance and net asset determination.

Thanks,
Larry A

It was common enough with flat floor E Types (not the first 500) that it should not effect value in either direction. It is not that rare of a mistake.
