Hi everyone.
I’ve come across this E-Type that I was hoping I could get some more information on. It’s a 1962 with a removable hardtop. It’s been sitting in a barn and then outside for the past 20 years. I really don’t know anything about it or even a value. 876724 is the VIN. I’ll attach some pictures. Any info you guys could give me would be great!!
According to the XKE data website the VIN does fit in the range of cars produced for the 1962 model year, although that specific car is not in the database. Regarding value.....matching numbers for engine, gearbox, body number compared to the data plate under the bonnet would result in a higher "as is" value. As well as a higher resale value after restoration. Assuming the numbers match, the next consideration would be the amount of rust on the underside areas of the body. Rocker panels, boot floor, footwell floors, A-pillar would need to be examined. Given the condition of the exterior I would be surprised if those areas were still intact. If they need repair, that will add significantly to the restoration cost and would lower the "as is" value. A few other things to ask affecting value .....does it have flat floors or the later dished design?, is the car complete..... what is missing? Are there any records?
On a positive note.....because the finish mostly gone, it is easy to see the body does not appear to have been in any accidents, although I would check the underside of the bonnet and the areas behind the rear wheels for signs of damage to be sure.
Value is hard to assess and is relative to your goals for owning an XKE. This one will need a full restoration, and that time & cost will be significant. Assuming you would be paying a shop, the restoration cost would roughly equate to buying a well sorted, clean Series 2 or 3 in driver condition. So it boils down to what you want and how long you are willing to wait for it.
Cheers,
Richard
