I am of course going to get replacements so could someone please give advice on it's function and it's importance?

You're right, they are bolted onto inlet manifold at each side, according to the handbook but the book describes them as 'heat shields'. They are longish rectangular aluminum plates with a slight fold on either side. You're dealing with a mechanical neanderthal here, I'm afraid.
