Default Heat Shields

1974 V12 roadster.

I was driving along and I heard a 'bang' coming from the engine compartment. I couldn't explain it. Must have hit something but later I noticed the 'heat shield' which sits on top of the engine was gone! Actually, the bloody two of them have disappeared!
I contacted one of the major suppliers who could only come up with a 'rain shield' and did'n't know (or cared) of a heat shield. I have the original service handbook which describes it as a 'heat shield'.
I am of course going to get replacements so could someone please give advice on it's importance?
Many Thanks.

I'm a bit confused by your description of the two items ("sit on top of the engine"). That does sound like the rainshields, which are bolted to the top of the intake manifolds:
SNG Barratt - The Ultimate Jaguar Parts Specialist

Or are you talking about something lower down on the motor, closer to the exhaust manifolds:
SNG Barratt - The Ultimate Jaguar Parts Specialist

Or:

SC, Thanks for your reply.
You're right, they are bolted onto inlet manifold at each side, according to the handbook but the book describes them as 'heat shields'. They are longish rectangular aluminum plates with a slight fold on either side. You're dealing with a mechanical neanderthal here, I'm afraid.

In that case, you can order them from sponsor SNG Barratt (and get a 10% discount by mentioning JaguarForums.com):
SNG Barratt - The Ultimate Jaguar Parts Specialist
And any missing hardware:
SNG Barratt - The Ultimate Jaguar Parts Specialist
The rainshields are also available in stainless for a bit more.
