First, verify no wires broke or fell off. If you have a meter, check the voltage at the sender, it should read several volts. 0 indicates no connection to the gage, 10 volts no connection to ground.
I have been through several sensors on my 68 and have seen a variation of 25C between them. Suggest you place the new sensor in a pot of boiling water, connected with clip leads, along with a kitchen thermometer to measure the inaccuracy. Use the old sender as a plug. Or just ask your supplier for a new one.
