Smile oil pressure

My restored E-type has finally seen her first couple of 100 miles of road in the past 20 years.

Shock horror panic - oil gauge showing low pressure (30 cold, 20 warm, sometimes dropping to <10).

Browsing the various forums I decided on a quick clean up of the whole oil handling assembly on the RHS of the engine - not just the filter, but also the relief valve etc. to make sure previous owners did not "forget" something. I then bought not 1 but 2 different mechanical gauges that simply screw into the take-off point for the electronic gauge.

Breath of relief - cold idle 60, hot idle 50, hot 3000 rpm 60+.

I see many owners voicing the same worries and contemplating a very expensive rebuild - so make sure you invest in a simple hydraulic gauge (less than 20 Euro for a reputable one) before you loose sleep over it...

Sounds like you need a new oil pressure transmitter. These things were notoriously inaccurate even when the car was in current production !

+1 Fraser.

I recall a precisely similar scenario to our OP here back in 80s. Our original 4.2L sender was delivering about 10; 2nd came in 15-20; final 3rd came in at 40+ (all hot). Given that 2nd and 3rd were brand new OEMs in unopened Jaguar packaging, I endorse your comments entirely. Happily, the supplier expressed no grief in swapping 2nd for 3rd . . . suggesting a known issue.

Cheers,

Ken
