Default Original E-Type Toolkit — Worth It?

Jag has just reissued the original toolkit, but it's $900. Think it's worth it?

Hi Johnny Mayday,
Is the tool kit worth it? Consider that used ORIGINAL ones with crappy tool bags and rusty tools can sale from around $900 to $1,200. So, $900 for a new kit sounds good if you don't care that it is not as old as your car. If your car didn't come with a tool kit originally, then maybe not so worth it. Me, I am tool freak so I would probably buy it just to have it with the car even though my 68 didn't originally come with a full tool kit. Bottom line; if you like it and makes you happy, buy it.
Bill.

Agree, not bad for the money, I'd just as soon build my own tool kit but if I wanted one to go with the car this would be a good choice.

Original style tool kits are kind of cool, especially if it has always been with the car. I see that the kit has the cam shaft timing tool. You could put together a much higher quality tool kit yourself for much less. When I bought my Mark VII it had the original toolkit, I told the seller to keep it and he knocked 700.00 dollars off the price. I still found a few loose tools in the stuff packed in the trunk. I only carry a few tools with me as a talisman. If one of my cars breaks down I just have it towed home on a flatbed. If I can't fix it with a screwdriver, a couple of box wrenches, pliers or adjustable wrench, I'm not going to work on it on the side of the freeway.

Well, today, at the Classic Car Show here in Birmingham, England, I saw an E-type up for sale at £183,000 !!! Puts the tool kit price in perspective, doesn't it.

PS
I preferred the Ford Thunderbird at £57,000 - beautifully restored and fully functional. Trouble is it won't fit my UK house garage !!

Frankly, after 40 years in the Jaguar world, I wonder why, apart from concours, anyone would actually buy these kits. I have a set of AF spanners, pliers, plug spanner screwdrivers etc etc in the spare wheel in y car and they have been used, something these tools will never be. In fact, I doubt anyone will actually put them in the car at all. With over 100,000 miles covered, my tools have served many a time to repair the car at the roadside, and as long as he tool does the job I really don't care if it has Jaguar stamped on it or not.

If someone were to put together their own tool kit for a 68 E type, what tools would you put in there?

Mallet and jack for starters, then a set of AF spanners from 3/8ths to 13/16ths (the latter for carburettor unions as an example), screwdrivers one long and one short handle, plug spanner, pliers, an adjustable spanner, and probably something I have forgotten for the moment. But it is the list of spares that you will need as part of a standard kit that is most important too. I have a 3.8 so mine would be different, but a spare fuel pump, set of points, oil pressure sender, some bulbs I would consider essential.

As I recall, the toolkits on my E-Type and Aston Martin DB5 were in identical tool rolls and had the same selection of tools other than the ZF gearbox key. I don't have the E-Type list but here's the list for the DB5:
