Default Power Steering or not?

The 1971 E-Type I recently purchased has had the original power steering removed. Is there any point in having it reinstalled for a non-concours car.?

The brand new 1970 I owned back in the day didn't have power steering and I didn't even know it was an option. So I was fine driving without it.

Is this presumably a series 3 V12? In which case the power steering helps with the added weight and fatter tyres. If it's a late series 2 (I know they stopped production in 1970, but some weren't registered until later) with standard 185 tyres you don't need it. In fact, better without in my opinion.

As far as I know, only the V12 E-Types had PAS.

Correct, but some which went to the States I think had PAS. Also, people have fitted them more recently so it could be an after-market fitting IF its a S2

6 cylinder cars did come with power steering as an option. Their serial number always starts with a "P".

Hello,

i've got one on my 1970 serie2 OTS. (P2R14242 from end june 1970)
SNG proposes a kit for approx.4k£ from my memory...

I have to admit this option is very confortable.

Kind regards
Olivier

I was happy without it back when my 1970 was new. Of course it had 185 tires, which I intend to buy wider. Currently troubling over 195 vs 205 and 5" wheels vs 6".

My 54, 55 and 63 Corvettes don't have power steering and they work for me just fine.

Why do you intend fitting wider tyres? Is it the looks? Most people find that handling gets worse when wider tyres are fitted. Norman Dewis did a pretty good job of testing all sorts of tyres until he settled on 185s. A lot of people I know have gone the wider tyre route, then decided to revert to 185 as that gave the best overall result.

Something to think about, thanks. Looks is part of it.

My car is coming with 195s so I will stick with them briefly. After that I'll decide.

Somehow I posted one wrong link. It should be 2 S Types.

Which one looks most interesting?

Default power steering

I have had a ’67, ’68 and 2 ‘69s, all roadsters. I just acquired my second ’69, having sold the other 3 about a 100 years ago. Did not know the Series 2 even came with PS. My newest acquisition came with it and I was pleasantly surprised. I really like it since in my limited space, I often need to make several point turns to park so it comes in amazingly handy. I hope it is not one of those options that has a lot of maintenance issues. Yes, my serial number starts with a “P”.
