Default 2016 F-Type power tailgate won’t close

Hi all,

Had a dead battery, jumped it, opened the trunk, disconnected the battery and charged overnight with a professional shop charger so the boot was open.

this morning the car started right up, the charger tested the battery and the battery is fine but trunk will not close with any of the buttons.

Going to try and disconnect the battery for 30 mins and see if that resets anything, but has anyone else seen this or have any ideas?

thanks
Jeff

I wonder if the power tailgate perhaps can be reset, like the power windows? Check your manual.

This happened to my car along with the "battery low" warning - there was, in fact nothing wrong with the battery. I disconnected the battery (at the ground wire on the boot floor) for 30 seconds. Reconnected. Problem solved. Lost no presets, and everything including the power tailgate worked and continues to work as designed with no resetting necessary. My dealer tech says that needing a reboot like this is not frequent but also not unusual...he likened it to the occasional need to shut down and restart a home computer.
You can find this sort of experience reported on forums (fora?) of other marques, and for the same reason.

Thank you. Let me try the disconnecting the ground wire. I figure it’s something simple but I’ve only had the car 3 weeks so thought best ask the experienced guys here!

Happens to my coupe hatch occasionally when I'm rebooting the battery control module. No biggie. Just close the hatch manually. That resets the hatch and you can then open and close with the buttons as normal.

Thank you! I was hesitant to manually close it. Will give that a shot as well.

As you suggest, there is no problem at all with closing the hatch manually.
At a recent Jaguar show (Jaguars on the Island, Victoria, British Columbia - annually the largest Jaguar show/concours in North America), the local dealer had a display of Jaguars. The F-Type shown was a coupe, open to on-lookers -and they tried every feature for hours. I noted that by mid-afternoon the hatch would not power open or closed but worked perfectly well manually. The next day at the closing luncheon I asked the dealer rep if they had any problem starting the cars to get them off the field and back to the dealership. No problem at all. The F-Type went back in the showroom and the CTEK unit (used on all display models) was plugged in. All of this was expected and normal in these circumstances and did not indicate any malfunction.

Thanks everyone. Disconnected/reconnected the ground wire and manually closed. All is well.

I appreciate everyone’s input. I only had the car 3 weeks and had to learn the ins and outs from my XK.
