Default Audio System - At my wits end

Hey everyone,

In an attempt to improve the awful stock sound system (2018 InControl Touch Pro with the base audio system), I had an audio shop install Dynamat in the doors and installed the upgraded Meridian speakers, as others have done.

However, the sound system still sounds terrible. It does not matter what sound source I use, the sound is muffled/distorted. Putting my ear up to the individual speakers, it appears that the midrange and door subwoofers are not properly being fed the correct audio. That is, it appears that the system is not properly passing the high and low audio to the correct speakers.

Has anyone ever noticed this before? Any suggestions on what I can do to help with this?

Sounds as though the Audio Shop did not connect the speaker crossovers correctly or perhaps they are defective.
From a brief read on Google, it looks as though fitting a passive crossover is quite simple and not epensive.
Even an active CO looks manageable.
It is all about access to the amp and/or the speakers.
Bit I guess I would first go back to the "specialists" who did the speaker install.

Would it require extra crossovers? They are the Jaguar Meridian speakers, just the ones from the higher end system.

Not an expert by a long shot but don't the upgraded Meridian speakers go with a higher output amplifier?
See below. You may have unintentionally mismatched the speakers witha lower output amp. Plus the JLR spec. refers to multiple speakers.

They are the same impedance so I can't imagine it being an issue. I have seen others do the speaker upgrade without the upgraded amp

I recall a thread a while ago that said a software update to the system vastly improved the audio - crossover frequencies were messed up in the original code.

that sounds like it is applicable to my problem, any idea of what model year that applies to?

I think it might just be that the signal processing and amplifier in the car is subpar, at best. I love the car but my god the audio system is terrible.

I might need to look into people who have gone with aftermarket amplifiers etc, I doubt the dealer would help me with coding the upgraded amplifier.

Unfortunately you have to keep the existing system from amp up to HU. So you need to find out if it’s sending a garbage signal down the line.

Try popping in a CD and see how that sounds. Don’t crank it, just at a normal listening level. Does it sound clean? If not, pop a door card off and hook up a different driver to the mid channel. It only plays from about 300hz to about 4000hz so it won’t sound great but it should still sound clean.

I don't have a CD player in my model probably because of the incontrol touch pro. too new for CD, too old for CarPlay

Trying to get as clean a signal into it as we can. Not BT or radio. Lightning to USB?

Multiple people have done the speaker swap and had fair bit of improvement without having to touch anything else. No cross overs or software changes needed so something else must be off

Still not an expert by a long shot, but is it posssible the new speakers were installed out of phase.
Typically the wiring on one speaker would need to be reversed to correct.
Hard to understand why your audio installer would do this and/or why they did not realize they had screwed up your system

"Out of phase" typically means that one source is “contradicting” what the other source is doing. When a speaker produces sound, it is vibrating back and forth. ... If your speakers have the positive side of the speaker wire connected to where the negative should be, they will be out of phase.

I opened the doors myself and checked out the speakers, and even swapped the old speakers back in just in case, no change.

I think it is just the lower wattage system and lower number of speakers being less than I am used to.

I will live with it and continue to enjoy the rest of the car.

sorted my 770w meridian by sound deadening the door sheet metal and door trim, and swapped out all 3 speakers in each door with the higher end kevlar speakers, which iirc was from the range rover autobiography - was all pnp

got all the info and part numbers from another thread - unfortunately britcar is gone otherwise i could have found the order

I have a loaner RR Evoque with the base (I think it said 180W, insanely low) system and it sounds WAY better and more crisp than my system.

If I had to describe mine, it would be like the music is playing like it has the "under-water" sound effect added in movies/tv shows/videogames.

I've replaced almost all the speakers now and at this point I don't know what to do.
