Default battery smell

Jag is a 2015 F Type S. My trunk smells like battery off gassing. Upon inspection, the off gassing tube (name?) appears to be connected and routed properly but I haven't checked to see if it goes all the way outside of the trunk compartment. No visible signs of corrosion on the terminals but perhaps a little crust on the outside of the battery. Thoughts?

Wonder if you pulled that tube off, can you blow through it, or maybe use canned air? Maybe it’s plugged?

I’d call it a breather tube, but I just made that up.

Official term: battery vent tube

FYI, from the repair manual...

The battery is vented via a tube which is connected with a T piece to the vent from the secondary battery (if fitted) and passes through a grommet in the floorpan.

This has a potential to turn into a disaster. I have seen batteries eating a hole through sheet metal in classic cars. If you can, pull it out, inspect area around, spray baking soda to see if there is anything escaping. If it is original, and there are any doubts about it, just replace it.

If the vent tube is not blocked, and as you presumably have an AGM VRLA type battery, then it maybe the pressure relief valve which will activate when the battery starts building pressure of hydrogen gas, generally as a result of being recharged. Valve activation allows some of the gas or electrolyte to escape, thus decreasing the overall capacity of the battery.
