I would love to change mine and complete the CF look. Did you do the install yourself? I saw the assembly diagram for the front clip and it looks like a time consuming task.

 

Any chance the CF is more abrasion resistant than the stock plastic? For those of us with or pondering lowered suspensions, this is a serious consideration.

 

I'm pretty sure it's the opposite, while plastic scuffs too, I think it be more obvious on carbon fiber.

 

I suspect you'r right. The lowere edge or the CF lip would probably look frayed after the first couple of speed bump or driveway swipes.

 

Yep did the install myself (it came with instructions) and yes it was time consuming.
Lots and lots of bolts and screws but fairly straight forward and i did it with axle stands led on the floor
As for scraping it you would probably need to rip off the plastic spoiler underneath it before you scraped the carbon fibre spoiler but then are roads probably arent as bad as yours

 

Where did you purchase it? I looked at most of our supporting vendors and nothing. Cecil.......

Have to agree with you, I think you would scrape the air dam before the spoiler. Damn... that is really nice!

My dealer actually threw in a spare air dam for me. The original has frayed already so not sure how long till it needs replacing.

Re the wear factor of plastic vs CF, I would think the plastic is still more susceptible to wear, but CF will abrade too.

I do a lot of yacht racing on carbon-built boats. One of the tricks we use where there is an obvious wear point (e.g. You'll sometimes see a spectra spinnaker line resting against a boom) is to fix a Kevlar patch to it which is much more wear resistant. Yacht shops sell Kevlar sticky-back in strips and rolls of varying thicknesses. I wouldn't bother with the cheaper plastic air dam, but it might be a good option for the CF spoiler if you're not fitting the air dam.

 

Darn, air dam scrapes almost every day....I am glad that it hasn't touched the plastic yet.

 

I like the look. I'm looking to do 4D carbon fiber vinyl wrap on various trim pieces, much cheaper and easy to replace.

 

Having a CF splitter on the XKR-S I recommend you search that forum. One dink on the splitter and it is toast, it is very brittle and shatters.

 

That's exactly what I would have expected as I said above. However, I wasn't sure if the one available for the F-Type was a simulated carbon fiber wrap. over plastic. Real CF is not nearly as flexible as plastic.

Which car do you like driving more the XKR-S or the F-Type?

 

I am still in love with the XKR-S, it is very confidence inspiring. The F-Type is still very new to us. From the maybe 100 miles or so that I have driven the F-Type (and it being very cold here right now), the F-Type is faster, seems to follow uneven roads/grooves more (makes it feel a little more nervous than the XK), the exhaust note is obviously a lot closer and I can play with it more than with my XK. Best part of it is the exhaust can be muted easily and be unnoticeable at cruise.

I watched many videos and reviews on the XKR-S and its exhaust before I bought one. I saw videos comparing XKR-S and F-Type.
They almost sound alike but when you are in the XK you can barely hear it. it took me a long while to get the exhaust sound right in the XK. I have sport cats and basically straight through magna flows in the rear now in the XK ... it sounds just perfect to me know inside the cabin but from what I am being told it is very loud on the outside under full throttle. When we drove home from the dealer after we bought the F-Type my 11 year old son drove with my wife in the F-Type and will just played a little next to each other on the highway. He had the window down when I floored it and said holy ch!t to his mother ... which he would never do ... my XK now is much deeper than the F-Type's exhaust, does not have the crackles but the bellows are much louder.
I am still exited as ever driving the XK and I did not have a chance to drive the F-Type hard ... it does not look old next to the F-type to me but maybe it is "getting" a little old compared to the F-Type. I am a lot more relaxed in the XK and hope Jaguar will build another GT but I also cannot wait for the first good weekend when my wife and I can take the F-Type into the mountains and let it whale a little...

I'm very close to you, just south of Annapolis. We have another close-by Marylander (lhoboy) just waiting to order a 6sp manual, as soon as they begin accepting them. A Maryland cruise may be in order this summer.

 

I know the question was a little off topic, but I appreciate the response.

Both are great looking cars with b*lls out performance, but the XK seems a little more "refined". I agree that side by side the XK might be looking a little old, but hopefully Jag will come back one day with another GT.
